On its way to New Orleans, the “Sunset Limited” #Amtrak 🇺🇸 train #2 traverses the State of #Texas from west to east. This takes about 24 hours. I’m posting a few pictures here, taken along the route between El Paso and San Antonio, and during the stops we made. Post 1/2: El Paso and beyond.

Southern #Arizona 🇺🇸 impressions, while travelling on board the #Amtrak Sunset Limited. And lunch. (In the Diner.)

At #Maricopa, AZ 🇺🇸. Boarding the #Amtrak “Sunset Limited” bound for New Orleans. We will, essentially, be travelling on (former) Southern Pacific rails. As we depart, we get a glimpse of the 1948 “California Zephyr” dome observation car in the nearby park. And: delicious breakfast in the #DiningCar.

Spotted near #Maricopa, AZ 🇺🇸 #Amtrak station: a former “California Zephyr” dome observation car, the “Silver Horizon”, from 1948. Now on display here, serving as a local museum they say. Very nice!

French railway term of the day: Train balai. Literally means "broom train" or sweeper train in English. First one of the day over the high-speed line runs at reduced speed to check the infrastructure. Today that's us so we're running at 230 km/h instead of 300 from Paris to Lille. #BehindTheScenes

Es hat sich noch ein wenig geändert: - 🇦🇹 statt 🇸🇰: Wien ­<> Split ab Wien statt Bratislava und erst ab heute und nur bis September, dafür als EN mit nightjet-Wagen ...und ich hatte etwas unterschlagen: - 🇵🇱 neu im Fahrplan 2026: Kurswagen München <> Przemyśl. Ein guter Ersatz für den 🇨🇭-Panoramawagen.

Doing another post from on board the #AlaskaRailroad 🇺🇸 train northbound for #Fairbanks, while there’s still mobile phone coverage. (There won’t be once we pass through the mountains.) We have just left #Anchorage. Time to switch back and forth between the #Diner (for breakfast) and the Dome Car.

The #AlaskaRailroad 🇺🇸 “Denali Star” service from #Anchorage to #Fairbanks is powered by a pair of EMD SD70MAC 4000hp freight train diesels, equipped for passenger car heating. Our dome car #502 is the former Union Pacific “Dome Coach” #7014 built in the 1950s for the “City of St. Louis” streamliner.

A few more impressions from today’s trip on board the #AlaskaRailroad 🇺🇸 “Denali Star” #DomeCar. It was built in the 1950s by Pullman Standard for the Union Pacific “City of St. Louis” Streamliner. There’s the “Dome” in the middle of the car, as well as two “Coach” areas on either side of the Dome.

Still in #Bavaria on an #oebb #railjet heading to #vienna just before the last #crossborderrail of our trip, sitting in the @diningcar.at to get used again to the austrian cuisine! And yes, a trip with @deutschebahn.com is always an adventure!

CFM removed both middle cars from this D1 DMU, reduced frequency from daily to thrice a week and cancelled several intermediate stops en route from Chişinău to Ungheni, yet on our ride last evening still somehow managed to leave Chişinău early and already arrive late at the first stop

Great luck today, with an EP08 on my train to Miechów, this being a small fleet of faster locomotives from the 1970s, for important express trains in Poland. And what a great evening for a train ride! 😍

Dear Great British Railways, Please bring back proper buffet cars/shops/cafés on long distance trains. It's nice to have somewhere to walk to, buy something to eat or drink, and break up the journey.

Inmiddels ook Bolzano voorbij, of Bozen - dit is immers Duitstalig Italië (wat ik altijd nog een wonderlijk concept vind). Hier overgestapt op een RailJet richting Innsbruck. Tijd voor een drankje in de @diningcar.at.

Impressions from a ride on the #RhaetischeBahn #Bernina line, from #Tirano 🇮🇹 northwards to the #Engadin🇨🇭#Inn river valley and St. Moritz. Some elderly #RhB vehicles seen en route. This was in January 2020, just weeks before the pandemic severely restricted possibilities of international rail travel.

😍 Budapest-Keleti is such a gem. Starting the journey back to Brussels after an intense week in the new Hungary.

A #DB Class 101 electric is hauling the train as far as #Villach, where the cars will be rearranged, following the arrival of the #Vienna to Rome and Milan train.

Back to Cairo by 07:15 VIP express. Theoretically the best train type after the Talgo, but I’m surprised this is so little different from the next rung down (‘express’) I was on yesterday. But then that’s the point of trying all 3 express types. I do so, so you don’t have to…

Ich bin für ca. 2 Wochen in der Ukraine unterwegs. Kyjiw, Charkiw und Ostukraine. Die Fahrt von Wien nach Kyjiw dauert mit der Bahn mehr als 21 Stunden. Mit dem Nachtzug direkt von Bahnsteig 12 des Wiener HBf in den Krieg.

Dienstreise in Berlin beendet, zurück nach Hause geht es aber noch nicht: Vom Berliner Hauptbahnhof geht es fürs Wochenende nach (wenig überraschend bei mir) Tschechien, natürlich nicht ohne ein Abendessen an der Elbe im @diningcar.at. Mit Umstieg in Děčín ist Benešov nad Ploučnicí schnell erreicht.
