Going through the pictures taken last October, when travelling on board the new #Amtrak 🇺🇸 #NextGenAcela high-speed train on the “Northeast Corridor” to New York. This #Alstom #Acela is a close relative to the future French #TGV, and it’s actually quite stylish. Top speed was above 250 kph.

Pictured here is an #RhB🇨🇭#RhaetischeBahn Ge4/4 I on the #Albula line, hauling the narrow-gauge #GlacierExpress from #Davos, bound for #Zermatt. This is the “world’s slowest express train” they say, and it’s arguably one of the most scenic train rides. Photo taken in August 2011.

Photo taken while travelling on an #ÖBB 🇦🇹 #Railjet last week: the sun shines through the window of the #DiningCar boarding-door, with its fork and knife sticker on the glass, designating the restaurant zone. The shadow of this sticker becomes manifest on the grey floor carpet of the vestibule area.

Fancying Austrian cuisine, in a Swiss restaurant? Try the #SBB🇨🇭#DiningCar on #EuroCity #Transalpin, a train linking these two countries. The diner is the type of car you will otherwise find on many Swiss InterCity trains, yet the menu and staff are Austrian, the same as on #ÖBB 🇦🇹 #Railjet trains.

The long consist was first hauled by one #ÖBB 🇦🇹 Class 1016/1116 #Taurus electric, then by two of them for the steep gradients on the #Arlberg line. Finally an #SBB🇨🇭#Re460 brought us, on time, into #Zurich HB.

Today a walk along the #Rilke Trail, on the cliff edge, overlooking the Bay of #Trieste 🇮🇹. It’s still very early spring here. The air is a bit hazy, yet the views of #Duino castle are always nice. And there’s a (freight) train on the last photo 😉. This is the Venice to Trieste and Ljubljana line.

Seen last week at #Lyon 🇫🇷 Part-Dieu station, while waiting for my connecting train: the #Renfe 🇪🇸 #AVE Class S-100 high speed train, a close relative of the #SNCF TGV-Atlantique. They were about to leave for #Barcelona. The car with two rows of windows, one on top of the other, is the #Cafeteria car.

On the last train for today: a 250 kph #FS 🇮🇹 #Trenitalia #Frecciarossa Class #ETR600 high-speed tilting train takes me from #Milan to #Venice. It’s got a sort of #DiningCar, labelled “Freccia Bistrò”. Well, it’s a counter where one can purchase drinks and light meals to take to one’s seat.

#FS 🇮🇹 #Trenitalia #InterCity trains, like the #Ventimiglia to #Milano one today, haven’t got a proper #DiningCar in their consists. Yet, in most cases, there’s a multi-purpose car with vending machines and an area with bar stools. The espresso coffee, it costs 1.30 Euros, is actually quite decent.☕️👌

With #Trenitalia 🇮🇹 #FS #InterCity from #Ventimiglia to #Genova and #Milano. Beautiful scenery, as we pass along the #Mediterranean and through coastal towns.

Next step, prochaine étape : #Marseille to #Nice on board an #SNCF 🇫🇷 duplex #TGV #inOui. It’s got a nice #Bar #DiningCar where a lovely steward is selling food and drinks. The interior of the cars, namely the seats, follows the #Océane design style.

And in case you are more of a window or aisle-seat kind of person: it’s got plenty of these as well. ❤️

#Genève🇨🇭Cornavin to #Lyon 🇫🇷 Part-Dieu on a loco-hauled train today: a nice surprise to see an #SNCF Class #BB22200 “nez cassé” electric hauling a consist of #Corail carriages. They were built in the 1970s. In my view, they are still among the most comfortable and stylish cars around on French rails.

Good morning from the #SBB🇨🇭#elvetino #DiningCar. I’m travelling along the #Jura piedmont line on board an #RABDe500 #ICN tilting train, enjoying a late second breakfast in the diner.

#ÖBB 🇦🇹 Class 5081.500 #Schienenbus railcars used to work passenger services over the #Erzbergbahn line. They were specifically equipped for operations over the steep incline. This is long gone. On the picture below, taken in July 2011 at #Erzberg station, we see a railbus working a tourist train.

Siebenbrunn-Leopoldsdorf (for those who like long train station names). Rural #Austria 🇦🇹 in a way, yet just a stone’s throw from #Vienna. Picture taken in November 2018, before the line was upgraded and electrified. This is actually the most direct line to #Bratislava 🇸🇰, via #Marchegg.

#Lyon #Perrache 🇫🇷 in May 2007: an #SNCF “BB Jacquemin” class 25200 dual voltage electric (with an interesting logo mix on the front) is awaiting departure, ready to work a rake of Swiss #SBB carriages. To the right, one recognises a #Z2 unit displaying a blue regional livery.

#Szombathely 🇭🇺 in June 2011, at dusk, at about nine in the evening. That day, I travelled from #Zagreb 🇭🇷 to #Vienna 🇦🇹 on board train #284. This through service, via #Hungary, only existed for about two years, if I remember well. A #GySEV Class #V43 electric will take us as far as #Sopron.

#Split 🇭🇷 station, one day in June 2011 at 08:30 in the morning: arrival of the night train from #Zagreb, with through cars from #Budapest 🇭🇺, a sleeper from #Belgrade 🇷🇸 and a car-carrying van, positioned right behind the #HŽ Class 2062.100 diesel.

An #ÖBB 🇦🇹 Class 2143 diesel and #Schlieren carriages on a #Vienna bound train: a picture taken in 1991 at #Gmünd station. This is the #Waldviertel 🇦🇹 area, Austria’s very North. That section of the so-called Franz-Josefs-Railway wasn’t electrified yet, hence the diesel engine working this service.

Dietrich #Bonhoeffer. Born 4 February 1906. Anti-Nazi dissident. One of the founders of the “Bekennende Kirche” resistance movement. His poem “Von guten Mächten wunderbar geborgen, erwarten wir getrost, was kommen mag”, has become a worship song. He wrote it before being murdered at KZ Flossenbürg.

A train, as #European 🇪🇺 as it gets. This is #EuroCity #175 “Jan Jesenius”, pictured here at Bad Schandau in May 2013. It used to serve four European capital cities on its daylong trip from #Hamburg: #Berlin 🇩🇪, #Prague 🇨🇿, #Bratislava 🇸🇰 and #Budapest 🇭🇺, a journey of more than 18 hours.

#Kempten 🇩🇪 in late June 2007: a #Siemens #ER20 #Eurorunner diesel in #Dispolok livery is seen here, working a service bound for #Oberstdorf. The cars were labelled #Alex, standing, back then, for #Allgäu Express. This locomotive type can also be seen in Austria, i.a. as #ÖBB Class 2016 #Hercules.

In the early 2000s, in #Belgium 🇧🇪, one could still see loco-hauled services like the one on the photo: an #SNCB #NMBS Class 62 diesel, working a train composed of #M2 type cars. The #Geraardsbergen to #Gent line in western Belgium was one of the places where one could witness this type of operation.
