The #DB 🇩🇪 #ET420 Class 420 S-Bahn units are of a late 1960s design. The first batch was built in view of the 1972 #Munich Olympics. The one, of the 420.4/9 sub-type, seen at Munich East yesterday, is displaying the distinctive nose design of the class: rounded cab windows and rectangular headlights.

Today’s post is a “would have” one. Today, 15 April, would have been the first day of operation of the #Basel🇨🇭#Malmö 🇸🇪 #EuroNight #472. Lacking government funding, the operation of this train was eventually cancelled. A shoutout to all who really tried hard to get this train up and running!

Today another #Basel🇨🇭#Tram picture, taken earlier this afternoon at #Schifflände neighbourhood, by the #Rhine river: a meet of two #BVB Be4/4 “Cornichon” tramcars from the 1980s. The trailers are of a 1960s design. (They were rebuilt in the 1990s however, with the introduction of a low floor area.)

An extensive narrow-gauge network once existed in #Greece’s south 🇬🇷. The voyage usually started (and ended) in #Athens at the #Peloponnese station. The train on this 1985 photo is, if I remember well, the overnight service from #Kalamata, hauled by an “Alco” Class 9100 and an “Alsthom” Class 9200.

Another day in #Basel 🇨🇭, another #tram. This is a #BLT #Stadler Be8/10 #TINA unit, seen approaching #Heuwaage stop, on a line #17 afternoon peak hour service for #Ettingen. Line #17 is a reference to the former Birsigt(h)albahn, which actually started from Heuwaage stop, originally.

Dietrich #Bonhoeffer. An anti-Nazi dissident. One of the founders of the “Bekennende Kirche” resistance movement. He was murdered at KZ Flossenbürg on 9 April 1945, 81 years ago today. His poem “Von guten Mächten wunderbar geborgen, erwarten wir getrost, was kommen mag”, has become a worship song.

A relaxing #Easter Monday hike in the #Basel🇨🇭region, on the #Jura ridge. The trail crosses into #France 🇫🇷: some of the🇨🇭/🇫🇷 border demarcation stones date back to 1817, right after the Vienna Congress. And we very much enjoyed our refuelling stop at a lovely “mountain” hut … at some 700 metres a.s.l.

Pictures taken while travelling over the scenic #Bohinj line from #Nova-Gorica to #Jesenice in February 2017, on board a #SlovenianRailways 🇸🇮 class 813/814 unit. These railcars, of Italian design and similar to #FS 🇮🇹 ALn 668.1800, were built in the 1970s. And they come with opening windows.

When I lived in #Belgium in the early 2000s, I regularly participated in railtours organised by the Belgian railfan association #PFT #TSP. In 2009 we got on a trip to #Oostende, #Zeebrugge and #Brugge. We travelled on board the Class 44 and 45 diesel railcars, pictured here.

A photo taken in #Athens 🇬🇷, one summer morning in 1989. The train pictured here is the “Attika”, arriving at destination after a trip of 40 hours, from #Munich 🇩🇪. The consist includes #JŽ sleepers and #DB couchettes. Two OSE class A.451 diesels have worked the train from #Thessaloniki onwards.

Today a hike in the mountains above #ValleVigezzo 🇮🇹 in #Piemonte. Still quite some snow up here at 1,300 metres a.s.l. this time of the year. And there’s always a #Vigezzina narrow gauge train close by, taking me from, and to, #Domodossola. A 1950s #FensterAuf ABe8/8 is working the afternoon local.

The south of #Basel🇨🇭#Laufental area comes with some meadows on the #Jura hillsides that characterise as “dry grasslands”. They are places of a surprising biodiversity, and wonderful spots for a hike on this first day of spring.

Since it’s Saint Patrick's Day 🍀 🇮🇪: going through pictures taken in #Ireland in August 2024, travelling from #Dublin to #Belfast with the #IrishRail #Translink #Enterprise #InterCity. It’s a push-pull train. There’s an IÉ Class 201 diesel, and … (🥁) it’s got a bar-buffet style #DiningCar (sort of).

Pictures of my ride on the #HellasExpress from #Skopje 🇲🇰 to #Belgrade 🇷🇸 (labelled in the opposite direction though) in May 2011. Originally running from #Dortmund 🇩🇪 to #Athens 🇬🇷 (hence its name) over almost 3,000 kms, the train had been reduced to 2 seat carriages, enough for the 400 kms day-trip.

Going through the pictures taken last October, when travelling on board the new #Amtrak 🇺🇸 #NextGenAcela high-speed train on the “Northeast Corridor” to New York. This #Alstom #Acela is a close relative to the future French #TGV, and it’s actually quite stylish. Top speed was above 250 kph.
