I went through the engineering PhD process here. I can tell you that folks in the US are uninterested in living for 5 years off of ~$25k/year spending 50-60 hrs/week, after they already have a BS. Thats what you have to do to get a PhD. I know many Sai's. They work hard, struggle and pull ahead.
