Often when people talk about Tolkien, even people sympathetic to him who'll push against accusations of racism will grant that he did, to his shame, make orcs talk like working class Londoners. The blame for that one goes to Peter Jackson.

Zeta Gundam's Reccoa plot becomes even weirder when you discover it's riffing on a 1960s bedroom farce about a woman rediscovering her sensuality.

“You're thinking of the $175 billion in tariff money all wrong. As if I had the money back in a safe. The money's not here. Your money's in the White House ballroom, the renaming of the Department of Defense, the $10 billion transfer to the Board of Peace, and a hundred other unauthorized actions.”

"Say the right things and love happens" isn't the most thought-out criticism. How else is the game supposed to assess whether the characters have chemistry, or if that family visit went well?

Mamoru Oshii's post-GitS career is such a headscratcher. After a legendary decade he has a big international hit and then, six years later, follows it with a live action film shot in Polish.

Today for something different here's a couple of Mario Bros. illustrations by Ishihara Gojin featured on Famitsu magazine depicting their life in their early years. It's quite a funny read! Restored by removing text/other elements, applying the usual upscale/clean/retouch combo.

1. I always liked Jubilee, assuming she's an adult by now. 2. Fëanor. I wanna see what his problem was up close. 3. I'll shoot my shot. Wonder Woman. 4. Spock, by far the sexiest Trek character.

The Fellspyre Chronicles and Frieren having the same premise (woman who fought the demon lord retraces her steps decades later with younger people connected to her earlier party members) is such a delight.

i am trying not to joke about the Epstein stuff because it's so horrible but there's also this ridiculous element where it's like... discovering Dracula is real, he's taken over human society at the highest levels, he's involved in tons of evil and also he's a huge dipshit

The last 13 or so episodes of the original Gundam are as good as scifi has ever been. There's a perfect balance between the wider conflict and the characters' lives on both sides. The final battle would have turned out the same if our heroes hadn't been there, but that just heightens the drama.

I forgot how much screentime combining and separating this piece of shit gets. Tomino had to include it to please the sponsors and keep the show on air, but it feels so undignified when the strong Miharu plot needs to compete with this.

The Cucuruz Doan episode has a couple of shots where Amuro's off-model in a really appealing, androgynous way. See here compared to the previous episode where he's his usual self.

This is such a funny scene to reuse one episode apart. The Guncannon firing the same way all the time is whatever, but this is such a specific character moment. Sayla hating on Bright is charming, though.

Silksong: Maybe it's because I got spoiled about some things like the hidden bench and happened to find the wreath before going there, but I ended up really liking Bilewater and Groal the Great. Really fun platforming and a boss who's easily killed with tools.

The best thing about G-Witch is that logically, mortal enemies Prospera and Delling must at point have sat down and had a frank discussion on whether their daughters would make a good couple. And then Prospera didn't tell hers that girls can date girls.

Re: Avatar having no cultural foot print, I think it might be because those films are so unconcerned with pleasing anyone but one J. Cameron they don't really have interface points to contemporary culture. The old-fashioned Native American tropes have been well analyzed, but there's other stuff.

Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert, passed away today from cancer. Despite what he later became, he was an enormous inspiration to me, and I think a lot of the comedic flow I do still derives from him.
