#Mathstoday Had 2 tests today and 1 lesson where we did more two step equations. Lessons are planned for tomorrow and Monday tho! Can't stay after school tomorrow since I'm up on the train to Manchester to go to Teacher Talk Connect.

In #MathsToday I have used the AQA shadow papers to create some "second chance" papers for my Further #ALevelMaths students, to give them the opportunity to have another go at questions they previously got wrong in the mocks, but feel they could now do. Selling it to them as their redemption arc 😅

- an answer that gives a probability greater than 1 or an acute angle greater than 90° - getting one answer when the question said 'solutions' (or vice versa) - a transformation/graph/chart going off the given axes - getting a mean/median not within the range of the data

- a non-calc question requiring some rather involved calculations - an answer not matching the form requested in the question (e.g. a+b√c) - an answer that doesn't work when substituted back into the question - an answer that doesn't use all the information given in the question

What warning signs could students pick up on that they might have gone wrong in an answer? e.g. - an unexpected negative/decimal answer, - an answer requiring many more/fewer steps than the number of marks would suggest, - an answer that would be weird in context (e.g. a taxi costing £3000) ...

#Mathstoday Today and yesterday Year 10 have been doing simultaneous equations starting with practicing adding and subracting 2 equations before moving on to figuring out which they should use to get only 1 term then solve.

Is there anyone who teaches AQA GCSE maths who would be willing to give me a whistle stop tour of what’s available exam paper support wise? I know Edexcel’s stuff inside out but want to support ECTs who are teaching AQA with where to find things for year 11!

Y8 were factorising today. First we worked backwards from some area models, and then used prime factor tiles to model some harder examples. #MathsToday

#mathstoday #weeklywins for the second lesson in a row, y9 were presented with something that they said looks scary, but smashed it within a lesson. Today we were dividing algebraic expressions, and we got as far as dividing expressions with indices. I have even had a couple say they love algebra!

#MathsToday Used this task with a group of Y10 students. They struggled to view the task structurally, even when their arithmetic produced the result 241. But they gained some insight with 7x12 – 6x12.

In #MathsToday I sold tanh(x) as a 'hard northern function' by demonstrating how better it models the side of pendle hill than arctan does. None of this rolling south down hills stuff (I teach near the south coast). I had to show them a picture of Pendle Hill but it kept them entertained.
