This task comes from the CSMS Fractions (3 and 4) Test. It was given to a representative sample of over 200 Year 9 students in 1976/7 and to a similar sample in 2008/9. It was answered correctly by 57% of the sample in 1976/7, but by only 29% in 2008/9. Decimalisation? Growing use of calculators?

Last night I helped a Y9 pupil with his Sparx Maths homework. The items gave him the opportunity to clarify his thinking, but his focus was just on getting the answer - which then clicked him on to the next, quite different, item. And so on. And on. What kind of attitude to maths is this promoting?!

#MathsToday My two Y7 tutees could explain why the part on the left was labelled 1/3 and correctly said that arrow A pointed to 2/3 of the bar, working from the left. Eventually one of them said arrow B pointed to 2.5/3. But they couldn't name the shaded part or how many would cover the bar.

I wonder whether the French, who have had decimalisation for nearly 200 years longer than we have, are as bad at common fractions as we are? Y9 pupil: 7.5 = 7 ⁵⁄₁₀ = 7 ⅕
