So the function machine is edited from: x->f->y to x <+2 ->f-> y however the machine has an 'error' that the +2 is wrong way round for us to transcribe to algebra, so we 'turn it round' using an inverse function x -2> ->f-> y so this gives us y=f(x-2)

Today I learned that this just works.

I’m trying to teach this topic using the function machine notation that @blatherwicksam.bsky.social talked about at MathsConf last year. I like how this works for multiple transformations so wanted to introduce it now. #ALevelMaths

#MathsToday "Slanty" shapes were turned into right shapes by imagining them as stacks of paper which needed a push. This helped us identify needed lengths and ignore distractions. The aim was long-term learning, not short-term performance obtained by using formulae. Time will tell.

Got to test something new in #mathstoday. Normally, to decide which transformation to linearise a data set, I'd just show a circle of transformations where each quadrant has the options listed. I recently stumbled upon Tukey and Mosteller's bulging rule and ladder of powers and it's /so/ much easier

I've discovered some people call it a convex angle, which makes some sense, although it suggests a reflex angle should be called concave. Incidentally, did you know that angles that add uo to 360° are called explementary?

Big day today with the release of the final Year 10 unit plans wrapping up the curriculum portion of the Year 9–10 Mastery in Mathematics project at Ochre Education 🎉 To give you a sense of just how big Year 10 Mathematics is compared to Year 9, let's look at the stats 🔍👀:

It's really the antilog table that I remember, based log(2) = .3 to great accuracy, so antilog(.3)=2 antilog(.6)=4 antilog(.9)=8 antilog(.2)=1.6 antilog(.5)=3.2 antilog(.8)=6.4 antilog(.7)=5 antilog(.4)=2.5 antilog(.1)=1.25 This improves Fermi estimating from order of magnitude to 1 sig fig

Not all wrong answers are equal. I used to think students just needed the right information to fix misconceptions but then I read the work of Michelene Chi🧵⬇️

What might be the awarenesses that are needed to succeed in maths later in life? What LACK of awareness prevents people from succeeding in maths? What activities might help a person develop those awarenesses? That's what I want to know.

I don't want a "phonics for maths" and I'm not sure it exists, but I *do* want a "phonological awareness and print awareness for maths".

🧵 Next year my team have requested CPD on using tech in lessons. eg Geogebra/ Desmos/ AI. QUESTION 1. Can you help me by pointing me in the direction of good resources that will help me plan sessions for them on these? I’m not a technophobe but it’s not something I do enough either.
