This is Shayan Santarrosa! - - -✄- - - I literally have an entire ream of printer paper from BEFORE THIS BOOK WAS BOUGHT! trying to figure out Shayan’s design. These are from when I finally started nailing it down. I’ve noted some pose influences here, but I also referenced Matsujun & Lee Dongwook~

Decades ago, I designed, wrote, penciled this for DC Comics; inks by John Totleben, letters by John Costanza, colors by Tatjana Wood. It was assigned & completed on super-short notice; "can you summarize all you guys have done & are planning?" was the job.

for TX locals, the book is set in San Antonio, where there happen to be a LOT of Wonderland references. My most beloved is a punk venue that used to be called The White Rabbit (!!!), so I set a PIVOTAL scene there. for some Austin flavor, I designed a cartoon rabbit like those at Emo’s on Riverside

This is Dani & the Royals! - - -✄- - - The Royals themselves were modeled after the Mad Tea Party & the various influences I scribble down here in these sketches. Meanwhile Dani, Alex’s best friend from another school, is modeled after Alice’s cat Dinah, so she’s a bit skittish but VERY cute

The older I get the more I understand Kirby’s Fourth World comics. For years I didn’t get why it was the way it was. Kirby understood the ever present darkness & pitfalls Humanity are susceptible to. Glorious Godfrey seems silly but he’s the personification of a malaise that still exists today.
