That Feiffer hardcover was a life-changing discovery for me as a kid. A landmark for comics history and serious discussion of the medium as both art and “trash,” as Feiffer himself put it.

I’m rereading “Sandman Mystery Theatre,” the Wesley Dodds run from Vertigo. I’m appreciating it more now as an adult, but it’s still not as good as I want it to be. After 30 years, it’s time I finally admit to myself that I just don’t like the art. I enjoy the guest artist arcs more.

235/815: BATMAN ANNUAL #14 (1990) After damning his Journey into Knight with faint praise, I felt I owed Andrew Helfer a fair shake by returning to his magnum opus. This really is a revolutionary Two-Face story, and one which defines, fittingly, about half the character as we know him today.

Ok but seriously WTF was that Last Halloween finale. What the fuck was Gilda even doing and why. Did she fake her pregnancy or miscarry or was she delusional, and if it was real, who was the father. Why was she with Mario at all. Why would she ever be with him when she’s all yandere for Harvey.

Also, re: B&R:Y1, it’s objectively a solid Batman take, full of classic fun and fucking fantastic art by Samnee. Waid’s always great with heroes but never strong with villains, so I wasn’t expecting much from his Harvey. He was mostly fun/inoffensive, except for a minor annoyance at the very end.

Also, re: Last Halloween, I still have SUPER complicated thoughts about Loeb’s Gilda. But at least he finally gave her a last name (Powell, seemingly inexplicably) to properly distinguish her from the canonical Gilda Gold, which is the version I love and want to see receive her due. Sigh… someday.

A year ago, the first issues of “Batman/Robin: Year One” and “Long Halloween: Last Halloween”dropped, both with Harvey Dent in major roles, both by writers I didn’t really trust with the character. I was more psyched for the imminent start of the first ever Two-Face solo series.

No one’s ever made a database of letters columns from comics, right? Because I really wish there could be one. There are all sorts of reasons I wish we could archive classic comics as they originally looked when they hit newsstands and retailers, but I particularly want those letters archived.

Yeah, and Julie still hasn’t gotten her proper due in any adaptations. Plus, Vicki ‘89 was essentially Silver St Cloud with the serial numbers filed off. At least, so argues Steve Englehart, but given that the original proposed script more closely followed his run with Siiver, I can believe it.

Despite including numerous recent teams, plus a prominent nod to Jason’s time with the Outlaws, I note that Task Force Z was entirely absent from Waid’s New History of the DCU. Not entirely surprising, but still: dang, that story really has been memoryholed, hadn’t it? Not even a mention!

I was JUST writing my appreciation for Otsmane-Elhaou’s lettering in Christian Ward’s “Two-Face” solo. I was already intrigued by this book, but it’s now a must read for me, as a lover of master comic calligraphers like Todd Klein, Ken Bruzenak, and (heavy, pained sigh) Dave Sim.

I like this theory, but it’s a little strange to consider how it applied to Helfer, who had been a major DC editor almost 20 years before this, and also wrote the best Two-Face story ever. For him, maybe it came down to him wanting to show how a good, solid Batman story is done.

I love that you incorporated him literally punching through the wall. It’s stuff like this which makes your work an A+ adaptation of the game.

I fully agree. It’s why I loved “Batman: The Audio Adventures” so much, because it felt like a series about Gotham as a whole, not just Batman. And in terms of civilians, I wish more people knew about Ostrander’s “Gotham Nights” minis, maybe the closest we’ve ever gotten to Batman’s “Astro City.”

My first two comics, Batman or otherwise, were encountered when I was 7 and changed my life forever. They opened up a whole world of rogues, introduced me to Jim Aparo, and gave me my lifelong fixation for Harvey Dent (who I especially love when he rocks the Aparo turtleneck).

While I’d hate to see “Batman: The Long Halloween” get a live action movie (especially after the animated one), it’s be incredible if Gilda were played by Ella Purnell. Like, that’d be so perfect that I couldn’t even be mad. She’d singlehandedly improve Loeb’s story so much more than it deserves.
