Instead of telling people *not* to wear masks, public health officials should be educating people about the right types of masks to protect against AEROSOL transmission. 😷 Surgical masks do not protect against aerosols. 😷 Only FFP2/3 masks provide adequate protection.

Students and others, we don’t know if meningococcal disease can spread through the air. I see some of you in the outbreak zone are wearing masks. If you want to maximise your protection against a *possible* airborne threat, wear a *respirator* (FFP2 or - better - FFP3). These are ~N95/N99 in USA.

Reminder that there hasn't been a lockdown for 5 years, strict lockdowns lasted for a total of around 6/7 months and there was a significant meningitis outbreak at my university in 1997.

There is a century of data from scientists and engineers showing masks work, and a century of science denial by physicians who deliberately design studies that ignore the known fact of aerosol spread. It's long past time to be done with aerosol science denial in health care.
