His work meant a lot to me when I was a young cartoonist scratching out bad political cartoons for the Ohio State Lantern.

Never met the guy. During his peak in the 1980s, he was infamously unfriendly to fellow cartoonists. Quite critical of many of them, who he accused of ripping him off. He wasn't wrong, although Oliphant himself "borrowed" liberally from Ronald Searle and Carl Giles. Like I said, a complicated guy.

One of Oliphant's most infamous cartoons, published before the Catholic Church's pedo scandal exploded. Catholic leaders and apologists howled about this one.

The guy sure could draw. Just an astounding talent. And he was FAST. 5 cartoons a week. Amazing.

Many of his 50-year-old cartoons could run today. They were shocking then. Now they're just a depressing reminder of how our society has crumbled.

When Oliphant quit the Denver Post and joined the (now defunct) Washington Star in the 1970s, it was front-page news... above the banner! Man, those were the days to be a cartoonist. The Star folded in 1981. Oliphant had so many client papers via syndication, he didn't need another staff job.

I love his version of Uncle Sam as a besotted and clueless W.C. Fields. That’s just brilliant. Jimmy Carter was a two-foot-tall, fish-lipped midget. The first Bush always carried a purse. Dubya was another clueless midget, in a giant 10-gallon hat and a pair of big six-shooters.

Another giant of comics has left us. From 1965 to 1990, Oliphant was THE dominant political cartoonist in the US (even though he was an Aussie). A generational talent. A complicated guy. Often problematic, often brilliant, always scathing and funny.
