i follow a listserv for trans librarians where i learned about this zine: Being Trans in Philosophy. being an ex-academic philosopher and being quite aware of the transphobia that pervades academic philosophy, i am eager to read it. free to all. being.transinphilosophy.org

I've been harassed and sexualized by students and on campus, was drawn into wildly transphobic discussions by random colleagues, people assuming my relation to my genitals and just putting it out there, and am confronted with awkward silence when talking about transphobic harrassement and barriers

I am lucky to have one of the more accepting academic environments in critical theory, but even they were an absolute disgrace when dealing with trans students criticizing an obviously transphobic seminar

I think it's super cool when philosophers use creative formats to share their expertise and engage the public on serious social justice issues. Check it out!

This is a must-read for anyone invested in the health of the discipline of philosophy and its institutions

But I care so much for the trans people still doing philosophy that I can't help but promote their words, share in their hopes, and wish for something better.

I feel bad as someone so visible in trans philosophy not contributing but my story involves such heartbreak that I don't think I could be vulnerable enough; my story such prejudice and failure of support that I cannot provide hope.

When I left the discipline, I was one of two trans femmes of color with a PhD in philosophy and I could not see, or even imagine, a department that would hire me. Leaving ended up being on of my best decisions, an opportunity to leave an abusive relationship on my own terms.

It warms my heart to see this zine being made. From what I've read I admire the vulnerability and hope in these testimonies that philosophy can become a better place for trans people.

All of this is deeply felt: I didn't write it but I could have. All I got from my union was someone sympathetic to sit in the room with me when I was told I couldn't urinate in the building my office was in. Dunno what more they could have done, really. This was 2009.
