Personally, I don't think they need defending, but both LXG and Van Helsing are big-budget, later-stage Hammer films in the best way. They're medieval Underworld. They're what vaguely gothy teens (which I was at the time) were crying out for on the Internet. God I love those flicks.

There are a lot of traditionally-female traits that boys and even men are not being taught; including connection-building, self-regulation and empathy. With women less and less likely to pick up the slack in relationships, it leaves men who are unwilling to learn out in the cold.
