The finale of Stranger Things is bombastic, colossally stupid, and terribly written for much of its runtime, though it does manage to elicit some real emotion in its closing moments.

On the last ep of Stranger Things and...what the fuck is happening. Like I have no idea. My brain was barely functioning watching the previous three eps but seriously this is so incoherent. Too much stuff, way too many characters all needing their screentime, too much gobbledygook dialogue.

Holiday (1938 George Cukor) Delightful romantic comedy with the Bringing Up Baby/Philadelphia Story pairing of Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. While being very sweet and funny it also showcases Grant's acrobatic physical comedy at times, a holdover from his time in vaudeville.

Watched a Red Letter Media video which said that the 5th season of Stranger Things is just people explaining ridiculous plans, and holy shit, hasn't that just ruined it for me, because it is, it really is.

One of my Japanese students (learning English from me) spent 20 minutes trying to explain the plot of this to me using broken English, and it was up there with the most confusing times of my life. I went and read it, great story, my intro to Ranpo, great chat with her about it the next week.

A really fun movie, fantastic fight choreography and weird, post-modern flourishes. I think this is the movie where Chen Kuan-tai ends up on some sort of game show.

I Was a Male War Bride (1949 Howard Hawks) Sparkling romantic comedy from Hawks that loses a little of its lustre in the second half but still provides a fantastic vehicle for Cary Grant and Ann Sheridan's banter. Also, I couldn't stop laughing at this bit with Grant trying to sleep on a chair.

I didn't love this. The acting is uniformly excellent, but it's long, the tone is all over the place and it drags in spots. Ironically the lighter moments that feel so out of place are the highlights of the film, along with an opera scene that has been referenced by both Bond and Mission Impossible.
