#Watched Return of Ultraman (1983) - Anno’s (first) tribute to Ultraman plays very much like an episode of the show, except with genuine horrifying apocalyptic destruction in true Anno fashion. And Anno gets to realize his dream of playing Ultraman, no surprise after reading Insufficient Direction.

Also, the whole time we were learning about Dunk’s incongruous Flea Bottom slum background (that dude screams “farm boy”), this kept running through my head on a loop:

Been thoroughly enjoying A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’s low key doofus charms, and then there’s this extended flashback that’s all grimdark miserablism, and reminds me why I was so fucking sick of this franchise. No more of that please. Also, little I hate more than flashbacks/dream sequences. 🤮

#Rereading Corum #4: The Bull and the Spear (Moorcock ‘74) - the 2d trilogy truly feels like a different beast, better written, tighter plotting. Recollected it being more Irish, but man it is so deeply based in Celtic mythology, with the main antagonists being ersatz Fomorians (the “Fhoi Myore”).

Ten points for anyone who knows what film series this is from without looking it up.

#Watched F1 (2025) - while I love a car chase, I really don’t care for a car race. And this bog standard sports drama didn’t change my mind; it’s dull, tired, just Major League but with cars and no humor. Plus I much prefer Pitt in a supporting role. Probably better on IMAX, but not much.

As I said, if they want me to watch this thing, they should have put in some violence and nudity. Like, a fantasy sequence of M doing a Basic Instinct icepick scene on the Donald, and maybe some parkour. Otherwise, hard pass.

Riveting when Miki Sugimoto is raining down violence, sometimes in a stylish red coat, sometimes buck naked. But did we need so much screen time devoted to fugly scuzzballs sexually assaulting women? Shocking the audience is a noble goal, but would it hurt to show a little imagination when doing so?
