The idea is that, by putting forward these alternative views of style and beauty, you are giving people options. There is not just one singular standard of beauty — there are many. He doesn't think that we should all conform to "airport retail aesthetics."

Owens says he enjoys distorting the human form because he feels this promotes open-mindedness and tolerance.

As he puts it, "Distorting the human figure is so much more profound and brave." And that's the theme we see in much of his work: the sculptural, almost alien like silhouettes.

think it's important to pause here and note that Owens is not talking about body optimization or conforming to one body type, such as the conventional ideal of male beauty as represented by the Statue of David. Instead, he's talking about body distortion.

I should state at the outset that if you like bespoke men's tailoring, it's hard not to appreciate Owens's work. He is a master of pattern making. The way he gets materials to twist and turn mid-air, creating sculptural silhouettes, is pretty amazing.

The proliferation of this quote is so interesting to me. It's often posted by right wing chuds who use it to defend conventional aesthetic ideas — such as the importance of having a lean, athletic body — but they don't really understand Owens's work. Let's talk about it. 🧵
