『船頭安五郎』第一巻発売によせて。 都市・文明というものは、常に周辺の生産物を消費し続けないと1日も成立しません。江戸は18世紀世界最大の都市です。 ペリー来航の際、武装艦隊が江戸湾に居座るだけで上方からの廻船のチョークポイントを抑えることができました。武士が何万人いても江戸の百万人の飢餓を防ぐ術は無いので、幕府は開国せざるを得なかったのです。 そして今でも物流の9割以上は船で、チョークポイントはたくさんあります。 鉄道や自動車道ができる前、江戸へのハイウェイやサービスエリア、ドライブインにはどんな風景やドラマがあったのでしょう。

眼鏡をひとつ新調する。だいたい5年に1つ新調し、前の眼鏡を予備に回すという運用をしているが、今回は3年ぶり。年配の店員さんが「みなさん、新調でいらっしゃいますね。この先どうなるか分かりませんからね。眼鏡がないと生活できませんものね」という。 　「ルソンの霧　見習い士官敗残記」(石田徳　朝日新聞社1971年)という従軍回想録がある。著者は極度の近眼であった。冒頭、ルソン島沖合で乗船を沈められた著者は、持ってきた眼鏡7つを持って海に飛び込む。 　読んだ時圧倒的なリアリズムを感じた。眼鏡使用者にとって、眼鏡の有無は死活問題だから。
