Imagine a world in which we hate homelessness more than we now hate the homeless & unhoused. A world in which we hate poverty more than we hate the poor.

The Mall crossings are once again open & many drivers are once again failing to obey the stop signs or yield to pedestrians. The city should close them permanently—for public safety & for the symbolic statement that on the Mall, if nowhere else, people are more important than cars. But here we are.

My 3 kids asked for a raise in their allowance, so I told them they have to type a proposal for the amount they want and the chores they will do in exchange. Welcome to bargaining, little ones.

There’s a reason they’re targeting libraries. They don’t want you educated. They don’t want you to have a nuanced view of history. Or to read novels that will give you empathy. Or to know about inspiring women, Black or LGBTQ people. They want you intellectually small and easy to manipulate.

You may recall the deceitful letter the city school board sent out in February bashing Charlottesville Education Association. CEA didn’t back down, got the collective bargaining contract, and then filed a successful grievance against the school board. Union strong!

It's crazy how easy it would be to build a fair, decent society. Every day wouldn't be perfect, but it wouldn't be desperate, it wouldn't be terrifying. We could make it good so easily. It's just a few evil, slime-brained, greedy freaks who force horrors on us. We could remove their power. We could.

Last year, the CCS Board voted to bring armed police back into our schools without meaningful community input and despite concerns from parents, teachers, staff, and students. Research shows School Resource Officers (SROs) don’t make schools safer and can harm our most vulnerable students.
