Some thought experiment. X is a British citizen (or has ILR) and Y married X and came to the UK on a spouse visa. X earns £40,000 a year. Currently Y can get (with a hefty fee) ILR after 5 years. Y works part time but earns less than £12500 per year. Labour now say Y should not be able to do so. 1/

Two things need to happen at this point: 1) Scrap proposals and pull a mea culpa for ever suggesting them 2) Fire Mahmood as Home Secretary and get someone in who isn't chasing soundbites. You can't "water down" proposals which are so obviously inhumane, hostile, unworkable and ignorant of reality.

One other thing re Rayner and ILR. Look at the clarity of language in her speech and compare it Paul Ovenden’s execrable waffle supporting Mahmood’s policy the other day. Orwell was right, obfuscatory and flowery political language disguises poor political thinking.

The British government when we applied for my wife's spouse visa under the Tories: you don't need to work, it's not a condition for the visa and after 5 years you can settle. Labour now: well actually you should have worked and also earned more than this new income threshold we just came up with.
