Musk's voice is more powerful in this country than our Prime Minister's. That isn't healthy

Middle England believes in nothing if not law and order. The far right’s strenuous attempts to incite lawless behaviour out of a family’s tragedy — against that family’s explicit wishes — will not play well with them.

If a state’s argument for bombing, starving, machine-gunning, imprisoning, torturing and raping its neighbours is that it’s concerned they might one day do that to them, hasn’t that state lost the argument? Hasn’t it become the monster it feared?

Farage plans to ditch workers’ rights, cut the NMW, scrap the Equality Act, legalise discrimination, take us out of the ECHR and have a deregulation bonanza to remove our protections and make it easier to exploit and endanger us… for profit. He couldn’t give a shit about working people.

A lot of issues need to be debated in the Labour leadership contest. Among them — Rejoining the EU; Fair taxation for billionaires, even if they happen to own media empires; Israeli donations to government ministers, in addition to others who seek to influence government policy with cash.

I’ve not exactly been extolling Streeting’s virtues on here, but his offer of rejoining the EU might well give him real traction. Starmer idiotically left himself vulnerable on this issue: it’s bloody obvious to everyone now why we are so badly under-achieving economically.

I suppose the strongest argument in favour of Burnham is that — unlike anyone in Starmer’s immediate unctuous, compromised and failed circle — the PM made a determined attempt to block his rise to power. This suggests Burnham represents a useful change in direction.

The Reform messaging on this is that a £5m gift is the bare minimum a man of 62 requires — over and above his current £1m a year incomings, of course — to see out the rest of his life in comfort. I’m not sure how that will play with ordinary working Reform supporters.

Important data point here: “A sharp fall in Labour's performance is accompanied more often by an above average Green performance than it is by a strong Reform performance”. The Greens have already hurt Labour even before any direct gains.
