I don't remember the last good speech I heard from a politician in English. I don't mean good as in I agree with it, just in term of oratory as a skill. Making a coherent argument convincingly and with wit and emotion. Making a moment feel historic. Not giving off supply teacher energy.

Keep seeing people in the UK say Labour need to be like Mamdani... and then follow up with 'but without his support for immigrants, Palestine, trans people, rent controls or nationalisation!' Rancid vibes of cruelty, selling every spreadsheet not nailed down to Palantir, and tepid reforms ain't it.

Looking at the results for Greens/Lib Dems, and around my very gay corner of Haringey, I can't help but feel that Labour's heel turn against LGBTQ+ people has cost them very dearly in this election. By no means the only factor, but it's pointless cruelty no labour councillors can justify here.

Saw someone turned away from voting today for lack of id - an older woman and her carer who asked me for help getting her chair gently off the curb. Couldn't find her passport. The polling station volunteers looked appropriately uncomfortable but in a way which indicates they are used to it by now.

Between this and the Fukuyama essay in the same vein it's enjoyable to confirm my longstanding theory that many 'public intellectuals' are merely those pseuds most desperate for public validation, so rank in their need that they become publicly addicted to the sycophancy machine. So one of the weird things about the political fight over the EHRC code is that the main GC attack line - that it's been delayed for political reasons - would be completely defused if the government just dropped the self-evidently incorrect claim that the SC judgement brought 'clarity'.

Also it's darkly funny that, in a government policy document listing key definitions, they could not offer a definition of biological sex, because the legal term has no definition, and there is no coherent binary definition of sex in science. Is it clear yet the supreme court were winging it?

Amidst worse news, I'm very glad to see that the digital ID policy is steering away from including gender/sex data at all - this is the right move from practical and moral perspectives. That data is often wrong, leads to outing, harassment or exclusion, and not needed on any kind of ID card.

This is a similar playbook indeed. These people are 'merchants of doubt', as Oreskes & Conway put it in their book and documentary of the same name. Except this time the BS is coming from the top. Highly recommended read/watch for defenders of trans rights and clinical researchers.
