An oldie but a goodie. Old Soviet joke: a man goes to a newsstand every day and looks at just the front pages of all the newspapers. The guy behind the stand asks him what he's looking for. "An obituary". "But comrade, obituaries aren't on the front page!" "The one I'm looking for will be."

We are losing our local curlews, 7/8 nesting attempts failed in 2024 and only two pairs arrived in 2025. It will be devastating to not hear them calling through Spring and early Summer. No one wants to help around my way, I've tried.

Restoration work on Exmoor's peatlands is helping the national park to remain a vital refuge for bird species in decline elsewhere in the UK, according to a new report:

Peatland restoration boosts bird populations on Exmoor
A new report shows peatland restoration on Exmoor is reversing national declines in several bird species, with Grasshopper Warbler, Reed Bunting, Whinchat and Common Snipe all recording increases. The Moorland Bird Report from Exmoor National Park Authority, based on surveys of 17,000 ha in 2024, suggests peatland recovery has created vital habitats for breeding birds. More than 35,000 individuals were recorded, confirming Exmoor's role as a stronghold for vulnerable species.
