Yasushi Yamaguchi describes a “death march” during the development of Rayearth in which the staff lived at the office and slept under their desks for half a year. That was (sadly) normal at the time, but this one was the breaking point for Yamaguchi, who says here it's why he quit Sega.

Picked up this new Sonic manga nobody is talking about just to see. It’s mainly about this kid who gets a magic sword. Sonic is pretty ancillary to the whole thing, could easily have been Pikachu or anyone else BUT I'm happy they're letting him interact with humans again. That's kind of a big deal
