what really solidified this for me is when someone pointed out that if you're black, outside of a very small number of exceptions, you generally don't get to be in the same genre as aphex twin / autechre / etc. no matter how "experimental" you get

genre is a boarder defined by (usually racialized, patriarchal) birthright claims. there is no iterative potential in "genre" (prompt-based art is essentially bound to genre). genre is the premiere tool for assimilating problematic art into a hegemony.
