I could get deeper into it, but I think that if you would read something aloud with a dramatic pause for effect that is where you should have an em-dash. He is your friend who lives for drama.

The primary purpose of em-dashes is to connect clauses in a DRAMATIC fashion, particularly in ways to highlight that a clause is more important than other clauses that may be connected using commas. Em-dashes can also be used to show abrupt changes or enjambments in writing.

The first thing that commas can do is they can work with a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS - For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, and So) to combine two independent clauses. Basically, it can smush two or more sentences together with the right words.
