Despite a recent decline in overall hate crime, the proportion of recorded hate crime against trans people has tripled and now makes up 3% of all hate crimes recorded by police. 21% of these are violent offences (over 1k). Cases of stalking and harassment are up. Updated figures in October.

Not sure day one of the latest ID card rollout went very well at all, not least because the government couldn’t answer the absolute core question about why they’re being introduced. The case is that digital ID will be required for anyone to get work. The problem is ID is already mandatory. 🧵

Keir Starmer says everyone in the UK will be required to have mandatory digital ID. That’s not the kind of country we want to be. Liberal Democrats have always stood up to defend civil liberties against government overreach. We will fight tooth and nail to oppose these plans too.

An excellently written piece by Ian with some much needed common sense. ID cards did not just fall off the coconut tree. They exist in the context.

But instead they are gonna try and get it through the House of Lords based on, to reiterate, a *lie*! You need ID to work now! Anyone who has moved jobs in a legitimate business in the UK knows this!

Ming Campbell was a dedicated public servant and a true Liberal giant. His principled leadership opposing the Iraq War was a mark of his morality, courage and wisdom. But more than that, he was an incredibly warm and caring friend and colleague. We will miss him terribly.

Just a casual reminder that the Salisbury convention doesn’t apply to policies that weren’t in the manifesto and so do not have a democratic mandate. Lords have no requirement to vote for ID cards. Fun fact: Labour do not have a majority in the House of Lords.

Every single editorial about Lib Dem conference has focussed almost entirely on electoral strategy. Almost no mention of policy. Surely this is just simply a collective failure of political journalism.
