Truth bomb ๐: Traffic lights exist for cars, not for people walking or cycling. Before cars, we didnโt need them. Only when intersections became controlled and no communication was necessary could high speeds exist without chaos. We traded human interaction for convenience for motorists and danger.

The most insanely frustrating thing about the
#ClimateCrisis
is how the breakthrough we so clearly need isnโt technological. Itโs just a collective willingness, a determination even, to change in ways that would clearly be SO MUCH BETTER than the clear and obvious consequences of NOT changing.

I made an infographic map. Oxford's Congestion Charge scheme (from 29th Oct) is not like most congestion charge schemes, because you can get to most streets in the city without being charged. My impression is a lot of people haven't realised this.

Being car free means then even on days like today when it would have been easy to revert to the car in the past, we still cycled to Rectory Farm pumpkin patch ๐๐ฒ๐ป yes we did get soaked but we had fun and still brought home 3 pumpkins, 5kg of potatoes and a bag of goodies from the farm shop

I would be interested in seeing a decent engineering drawing, details of how the motoring network has been unravelled and a forecast of expected cycle and motor flows. Based on the image? Not a cycle street with parking bays sticking out like that. 1/5

People act like getting kids places without a car is Herculean. I biked three (one not mine) to the Kingfield Farmers Market, 95% on bikeways. No car seats, no stress, just laughs. The challenge isnโt moving kids, itโs redesigning cities to work for people instead of cars.

The U.K. isnโt using its tax regime to disincentivise SUV purchases. A UK driver pays just ยฃ3200 acquisition tax on an ยฃ85k car, compared to *ยฃ66k* in France!! As a result, 4x as many are sold here in the U.K. than France.

This car is parked on "hazard warning" tactile paving. Here, it is supposed to alert visually impared pedestrians of the Marston cycle route that emerges from the left and spits cyclists out onto the shared path. But of course, this is a popular parking and loading space. Bollards urgently needed.
