This week we saw, once again, the rise of "zombie ideas" that were awful from history but yet still rise from the crypt. In today's Deseret News column, I write about the danger of when elected officals hijack the central bank and manipulate monetary policy.

Opinion: History’s warning to U.S. manipulation of monetary policy
Political interference with monetary policy has a disastrous history, from Germany to Argentina to Zimbabwe. Will we ignore that?

My column out this morning at
@deseret.com.web.brid.gy
discusses why the firing of the BLS commissioner over the jobs report will hurt trust in public data, demonstrates poor leadership principles, and creates incentives for dishonesty.

Perspective: Complaining about the scorekeeper doesn’t help you score more
Revisions to the U.S. job report are actually a sign of commitment to getting the numbers right, rather than something nefarious.

and I have read recent bad takes about what a recession could mean for higher Ed. Some drew on the Great Recession, we wanted to show how things are much different this time around and outcomes unlikely similar.

Bumped twice from my flight. Got paid. Did some writing and email. Even did a TV interview from the airport terminal. Starting to feel like Tom Hanks.

Tight connection through Atlanta. Turns out, what may be a statistical improbability, that my Delta flight from Columbia, South Carolina is the SAME plane and gate as my next flight to Knoxville.

There are a lot of new master's degree programs, and I have been concerned that they generate a return for the college but not for students. However, my newest working paper finds that new master's programs generate similar outcomes to longstanding programs (and even a bit better at privates).

Higher Education is often modeled a strong ROI that states can invest in. It's not economic conditions that get into the way of higher ed - it's often political preferences.

One thing that econ critiques don't understand is there is no insult from them that economists haven't already heard from another economist in their professional career.
