What Microsoft has done and will seemingly keep on doing unabated is pure cultural vandalism. They have reduced a staggering majority of the western gaming industry's legacy to either hollow shells or smoldering ashes. In a just world they would be stopped, would already have been stopped.

Pretty damning condemnation of Phil Spencer's batting average with his acquisitions after it's all said and done when it's the game they acquired years before the rest of their Game Pass portfolio that's apparently kept the rest of the division afloat all these years. Shocking? No, but still grim.

Not a fan of those patting Microsoft and Xbox on the back for not directly shutting down studios *this time* since their last massive stack of layoffs. Letting studios be sold, or even letting them buy out their contracts for like a dollar instead of forced liquidation, is like the bare minimum.

Xbox closing Tango absolutely should have been a bigger deal that indicated a sickening rot in the company's priorities and decision-making but everyone got mad at the people that pointed this out.

As the director of a historical video game preservation institution, and someone who has dedicated his entire adult life to this cause, this is accurate. We have attempted to work with the industry's trade organization to find a legal path forward, but they refuse to offer a meaningful alternative.

Another thought on this - storage space (ie - SSDs) have increased so sharply in price that storing digital games is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive. Discs are DIRT CHEAP to produce - so even if you have to install them, you have a physical, cheap solution right there.

While not nearly as drastic, Nintendo is being weird about unions at the moment apparently. I wouldn’t fully discount them from the industry trend of punching down just because their punch doesn’t hit as hard.

I guess Sony has forgot how they won what their biggest competitor considered the most important console generation to lose… Not naïve that physical isn’t as popular at retail anymore, but killing it entirely without a suitable replacement is purely an act of greed.

If you can't preserve games, and games can go away overnight, then your games are disposable. If entire studios can be wiped out overnight, your workers and their work are disposable. The crunch and the health injuries never mattered. Something's gotta change, man.
