106 years ago today, on May 7th, an undergraduate at Christchurch College, Oxford, drank a glass of port then left through the main gates for a walk. I've been thinking about him, & his walk, for years now. It's taken a long time for me to figure out why - why I've kept returning, near obsessed.

His name was Alastair Grahame, and he was the 19 year-old son of Kenneth Grahame - the youngest ever Secretary at the Bank of England who left his job & wrote the 1908 children's classic The Wind in the Willows. The book started as bedtime stories to Alastair - nicknamed Mouse.

Last night’s win takes me just above 2200 (ECF) performance OTB for the season 5 wins, 3 draws, 4 losses vs average 2176 (54%) Opponents ratings range from 1972 to 2549 Mustn’t grumble!

Managed to win my first OTB game tonight, as white against someone around 2000 ECF. Found Bxg7 here which is flashy but shouldn’t be enough with sensible play from Black.

Fun > accuracy… (from …Bxh6 all Black’s play is sound!)
