It's just obvious that there is no good reason, at all, for the government to legislate what toilets you can go into. This is a thing that civil society was quite capable of working out. Inadvertently, I think, they give the game away by comparing GC transphobia to religious homophobia. It's been a long time since I went to church, but I'm pretty sure 'sinful' wasn't used as a compliment.

For the avoidance of doubt, this is the bare minimum for an acceptable response. Failing to acknowledge all three of these points tells you that the politician in question fundamentally does not comprehend the situation. Any mollifying, fudging, or delay shows they are clueless, bigoted, or both.

EHRC Code: 1. The point of the Equality Act was to prevent discrimination. So if you were discriminated against, you had (in most cases) a route to make a complaint, the law to back you up and a route to make inequality expensive enough that most companies complied (to some extent).

Equally, bigots want you to be sad and afraid. Transphobia is a psychological war before anything else. Don't let them win the battle inside your own head. Your life is a gift. Being trans is joy. There's wonder everywhere if you're willing to see it. Make the effort to see it. Don't let them in.

As a historian of sexuality, I find this most exasperating. Modern transphobia is a beat for beat remix of 1990s era homophobia. Same tune different lyrics. But no one seems to notice or care.

I will, of course, defer to my Scottish comrades on this in the end, but fwiw Kenny Gibson declaring up front he won't stand for misgendering as presiding officer is a significant gesture. It's the broken windows approach to transphobia and I think it could yield a great deal.
