I was rewatching MY GIRL tonight, and it hit me that Richard Masur’s role is exactly the kind of part I’d like to have a career doing: come in for a few good scenes and make a strong impression. I don’t need to be a star; I’d be satisfied being a solid character actor!

In case anyone’s interested, here are the two books I got for my birthday this year! (I’m reading UNSHOT COLUMBO now, and I’m really enjoying it. I just finished reading about two Larry Cohen stories that got turned down, and I’m about to read about a De Palma script!)

No offense to ENDGAME (which I like), but I don’t think movies should require homework.

This is truly one of the most suspenseful videos I’ve seen in a LONG time.

This is really tragic news. I can’t say that I knew Will very well beyond being social media acquaintances and listening to podcasts, but he was a really nice, intelligent, personable guy with lots of interesting takes. It makes me sad that he’s gone.

TV I LIKE TV

Whatever kind of hat it is, what I love about it in the ROCKY movies is that it really feels like a trusty, well-loved companion of a hat. It doesn’t feel like something Rocky wears to look tough or cool. He wears it because it’s HIS HAT, and that’s all there is to it. Does that make sense?

THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD usually gets referenced today in connection with the 1982 remake, but this video is a great reminder that the original is a dynamic, cool-looking movie in its own right. I need to see it again!

Just because I felt like it, here's my favorite pop-cultural discoveries of the year so far in movies, TV, books, and music!

I was listening to a song from THREE O’CLOCK HIGH tonight and it got me thinking: If I owned a repertory theater, I’d definitely program this as a Friday/Saturday night double feature! I’d call it something like “One Crazy Day and One Crazy Night.”

I love relics like this from the analog days of nerdiness! The fact that people had to make an effort to be nerds back in the day makes those moments more special, imo. I’m talking about letter campaigns to rescue TV shows, writing fan theories for STARLOG, and notes like this. All stuff I missed!

Bill Paxton was a really good filmmaker, and he doesn’t get enough credit for being such! It’s a shame he only directed these two feature films before leaving us (far too early), but I’m grateful we got these. Both are worth checking out!

I don't have a horse in the SINNERS/FROM DUSK TIL DAWN debate (I've seen neither), but I agree with the take in the quote. It's the same thing with these two. What does it matter that Peter Hyams essentially remade HIGH NOON into OUTLAND? Now we have two good movies to watch instead of one!

Laundry day.

Small tax refund haul from today! I’ve had my eye on the TOWER OF SHADOWS and ARCHIES collections for a while. I’m glad to finally have copies, and that I found a thrift-store copy of HARPER to replace my old one!

Fun fact…Abe Vigoda of Barney Miller & Godfather fame was the brother of Archie Comics artist Bill Vigoda.

I actually didn’t watch the Oscars this year, but I love this fact. I don’t begrudge theaters their concession prices (since that’s where most of their profits come from), but I love how real Conan is in the note, both about the snacks and one BIG reason why performing is fun!

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but: You are important. You matter. You have value. You’re unique, and the things that make you unique are the things that make you cool. The world is better because you’re here.

It's not Friday anymore, but I love how eclectic my #LastFourWatched turned out to be!

I’ll write more about REAL GENIUS later, but suffice it to say that PARENTHOOD has been unseated as my favorite film discovery of 2026 so far. I loved this!

THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!

Probably the FRESH PRINCE house, but I will say that this angle of the BRADY BUNCH living room reveals how good an architect Mike Brady was. The room actually looks dynamic from this viewpoint!

I finished rewatching this last night:

I really know nothing about GI JOE beside playing with a hand-me-down action figure (and NOT wanting Max Landis near it or any other movie) but this thread is definitely convincing me to give it a try!

I hate that we are living in times where it feels the only thing we can do is triage those affected. Where charity is the only weapon against the worst people in the world. But if you can fix something for someone today, please do it. A lot of folks are asking for help, maybe throw them some.
