For better or worse, I dug into that paper that claimed to upend everything we know about the oceans taking up most of the heat from global warming. It's a perfect example of how AI makes it easy to produce science-y papers that amount to climate disinformation.

Things are apocalyptic for science in the US. It might not seem that way to everyone because many academic scientists have tenure and get to keep their jobs (for now), and most grants last three years, so many scientists still have funding. But it's going to get way worse.

This should be shocking to all Americans. Trump is approximately zeroing out federal funding for all science and engineering. How does that make America great exactly?

Everyone always asked why I moved to landlocked Colorado to do oceanography. Because it was the world's largest concentration of climate scientists. Because of NCAR and NOAA. In Boulder, fewer are alarmists; they are overwhelmingly problem solvers. NCAR's science is patriotic. Vought is not. 🌊

It’s simply not possible to overstate how important NCAR is to US and world science. We need to fight this with everything we’ve got.

Based on what I have been hearing about the NCAR situation, no one knew anything until the USA Today article came out. That means there isn’t much actual organization inside the administration to pull this off and a chance to fight back. Call your congresspeople today! Especially republicans.

It is hard to overstate how critical @ncar-ucar.bsky.social is to climate science in the US and around the world. It's the beating heart of our field. Generations of scientists have trained there, and almost everyone I know relies on deep collaborations with NCAR scientists. It's end is unthinkable.
