Also great in new music the new Halestorm. Lzzy always delivers, but this album feels like it just hits harder from beginning to end.

The new Rise Against album, Ricochet (their 10th) is good so far (only a couple tracks in.) A big thing I'm struck by is the production - this is almost album rock production, with the kind of separation you usually hear on pop records. I love it. Same band, sounds like them, but fresh. Smart!

So now both Redis and Elastic are open source again, under the AGPL. Yay! When we teach folks how to do this in the future, we need to start by explaining how copyleft can work for a business. In both these cases, they're using copyright assignment to ensure they don't have to abide by the AGPL.

I feel a great deal of empathy for synadia and for the cncf. But what I actually want is for us to remind each other that we have a shared moral center, and can build our communities and businesses from that shared place. We’ve lost it.

We hung out and kvetched on Oxide and Friends last night. It was fun. But here is what I think the practical advice should be: 1) we should look for communities that are formed as *actual* communities; where what people want are clear, and they're together out of choice.

This very much reminds me of Peter Norvig's thing about test driven development. You can't write tests for something you don't understand, i.e. don't have a complete theory for. All the tests in the world won't get you there. Relying on LLMs for the theory fails in the same fashion.

I don't buy for a second the retro-active villain narrative. Many of the folks behind NATS are open source true believers, or at least they were once. Putting that code in the CNCF was a bad decision. It's expensive to fix. I wouldn't have fixed it the way they are.

Rich is 100% on the money here though. They can fix their problem (that the ASP is too low, and too many NATS users pay $0) without changing the license. Red Hat makes billions doing this every single day.

I'll be the controversial one: in this case, if NATS had never been given to the CNCF, I would argue they would be *less likely* to need to pull these shenanigans. They mortgaged their ability to build a lasting business and community to get access to more potential users.
