Good question. Generally no, the device must be placed in DFU mode for this to work. That takes a deliberate multi-step process. Also, the exploit abuses a very low-level bug in the USB controller that the default Mac/PC USB stack can’t normally reach. Hence the cheap microcontroller.

Upgrading to newer hardware is the only effective mitigation. Affected devices will carry this vulnerability for the rest of their operational lives. If your threat model includes physical device access by an adversary, move to an iPhone 12 or later. You should be adopting < 2 year old proactively.

Why this matters for journalists and activists: State-level adversaries. Border crossings, device seizures, and "evil maid" scenarios where a device is briefly taken and returned - all real tactics documented in the wild. The code implantation survives a factory reset or iOS reinstall.

Secure Enlave is NOT immediately affected. Apple devices contain a separate isolated component, the Secure Enclave, that handles passcodes, Face ID, and encryption keys. This exploit does not directly breach it, so a successful attack is not an instant data dump. It's still pretty bad, though.

The attacker connects the device via USB while it's in a low-level recovery state called DFU mode, used for device reatore. On affected chips, the code that controls where USB data lands allows the attacker to overwrite protected memory. The exploit completes in under two seconds, before iOS loads.

Why no software update can fix it: Every Apple device contains a small permanent piece of code called SecureROM - physically etched into the chip at the factory - that runs before iOS loads. SecureROM cannot be updated after manufacturing, so no patch is really possible.

NOT affected: iPhone 12 and newer are not affected. The A14 chip and later generations configure the relevant hardware correctly, making the vulnerability unexploitable. This is a rootkit / untrusted code implantation type attack vector, not a "decrypt everything right now" attack vector.

This is not a remote attack. An adversary needs the physical device, a specific cable, and about 30 seconds. No exploitation in the wild has been reported. But the public release of working code means the technique is now available to anyone with modest technical skill and around $15 of hardware.
