This is incredibly well said. I know people at Harvard and Columbia are suffering, just as people at the next institutions the administration targets will suffer. The only way this ends is when universities collectively stand up and say no.

This is a fantastic thread. I grew up as the son of two UVA alums and did my Ph.D. there. The culture clash between the alumni from decades gone by and modern academia has been holding UVA back for 25+ years. The school should be so much better than it is but instead is headed for decline. #uva

this is exactly right. the goal of youngkin and his board of visitors is to rewind the clock back to when UVA was a school for unexceptional children of the state’s conservative elites. even expanding UVA to serve all of the state’s talented students, regardless of background, is too much.

Let’s call it what it is — UVA President Jim Ryan’s forced resignation is an attack on all of our public higher education institutions.

His assumption, and mistake, is to think that his resignation will protect others. More likely is that those he is trying to protect will be at the complete mercy of the maga crowd, including the president, with no one standing in the way. UVA will suffer more.

Cville: 3pm today, at the Rotunda. you don’t have to love Jim Ryan, I sure don’t, but Trump’s DOJ forcing his replacement by Youngkin would be an absolute disaster for anyone affiliated with UVA, and honestly for our region at large.

XPS is a powerful tool for materials characterization, but widely misunderstood. I regularly get requests for XPS measurements that would not answer the question the researchers want to. JVST has done a great service trying to improve the literature and give guidance to new surface scientists. 🧪⚛️

It is truly amazing how many McMaster-Carr orders you can place when building a vacuum science lab. We're doing two a day at this point. Keeping the finance team busy! 🧪⚛️

Just to clarify, because I like Elie but he's mistaken here, they've already cancelled billions in grants. I got an email from a collaborator yesterday who said her entire federally-funded research program had been wiped out. This is devastating the careers of thousands of people. 🧪⚛️
