How does the "never Trump Republican" becomes a "sometimes Trump Democrat"? The answer: he was always on the far right, but just didn't like the garishness of the MAGA movement.

South Africa's president has given an unusually direct interview about Trump, to the NYT. “I do think the Afrikaner policy is racist... It is that racist sort of demeanor that we want to be able to whittle down so that he can see the truth of the situation.”

As someone who just got a skilled worker visa, I feel like there's another motive. If you can get settled status after 5 years, you only pay one round of skilled worker visa fees + NHS surcharges. With 10-15 years for ILR, the government will make ~£6-12,000 more on each migrant.

This is blatant patrimonial politics

I'm finalizing revisions on a conditional accept today. In the paper I grapple with segregation and land reform in South Africa. My late advisor, Nic van de Walle, always asked of my work "where's the politics?". To some extent I assumed the politics of race was evident in land in South Africa.
