I do genuinely believe that the way entertainment journalists wrote opinion pieces about sexualized characters in the 2010s did have a strong impact on the waves of internet censorship today. It's not that conservative outlooks needed an excuse, but that it conditioned the left to not defend sex.

(Doesn't help that too many big name men who supported sex positivity in nerd spaces ended up being creeps. But still, god I hate feeling like things backslid this much)

This reminds me of the sex positive movements like Free The Nipple that petered out in the same period it became clear that they'd need to support trans women too. Just an unwillingness to stand up to defend it when things get Controversial.

Even the popular attempts to promote positive sexual thinking were rooted in a kind of moral puritanism, too. Anything that could be repackaged as positive or empowering was Good Horny while anything problematic was Bad. It wasn't deconstructing the biases, but moving the goal posts.

Still annoyed by the framing of individual examples of sexualized women in games as the problem, rather than systemic lack of unsexualized women. So many articles about whether Bayonetta was problematic or not, whether the Dragons Crown Sorceress' was somehow pedophilic imagery or not.

It's the Bechdel Test all over again. An individual piece of media failing it means nothing. The statistical failure of Most Media failing it was the problem.
