Motivation matters! “By understanding student motivation, these teaching strategies and approaches can be fine-tuned and adapted to differently motivated students to maximize student learning. That is exactly what motivation scientists in education have been investigating for decades.”

Surprised that psychologists are still having the same arguments about whether what happens inside people’s heads matters for choices & success? I am! But fortunately @drmuenks.bsky.social and @carltonfong.bsky.social are here to reiterate the overwhelmingly convincing case that motivation matters!

Carlton & I wrote a response to a June article published in Inside Higher Ed that claimed "motivation" "is a word that means nothing" in the classroom and that it is not something that instructors should focus on. We strongly disagree and argue that it is actually *very* important!

The Spencer large grant program received 1970 intent to apply forms, more than 3x the number they normally get. They are implementing a new process where teams submit a pre-proposal and only 15-20% will be invited to submit a full proposal.

In the age of ChatGPT, it is quite comforting to read students' papers and see typos, stylistic idiosyncracies, individual variation in tone, and minor grammatical errors that indicate the paper was indeed written by a human.

New paper! What happens when instructors communicate mixed messages about students' potential for improvement? Compared to pure growth messages and sometimes even to no mindset messages, motivational and psychological outcomes are worse and deteriorate as the fixed components in a message increase.
