To solve this problem, there are things individual students need to do & there are things higher education & society need to do. The latter two need to decrease the pressures placed on students' time, increase the value & meaning of what they teach, & emphasize long-term learning not punishments.

Very true- an attack on scientific scholarship is an attack on scientific scholarship, no matter the topic. We all work together to try and improve health and well-being of society.

Don’t just say DEI as if it’s a bad word. Spell it out. Say diversity, which is the lifeblood of American society & culture & innovation. Say equity, which a just society should pursue. Say inclusion, because decent people believe in increasing belonging, not isolating people who are different.

Why study STEM participation if not to make sure diverse voices contribute to STEM? Diverse perspectives are key to drive innovation. These decisions are a huge backstep for scientific progress.

I am worried that scientists will self-censor and not share their work because they view it as trivial relative to what is going on But let's not participate in the destruction of science. Please share your work unapologetically and share others' work Science matters; your science matters!

Exactly this. It's really gross to see people arguing that their research will be "unfairly" flagged/catch strays. It sets a scary precedent where people start pointing fingers and suggesting that "those people" are the problem, but not them. Quite chilling.
