Helpful review of the TikTok deal, but I was even more intrigued by the reporting on analysis of #GenAI reasoning models. The video from Apollo research on how AIs "scheme" is striking, but I wonder how much of its drama is due to the anthropomorphic language being used. Video linked in next post.

I didn't know @newsguard.bsky.social used #GenAI to create podcasts about their work. Acknowledging the ethical & environmental concerns about GenAI, this particular use makes me wonder about the choice to emulate typical podcast "banter." Do people want that if they are choosing an AI-created pod?

Researchers are trying to make LLMs more reliable and sophisticated, engaging in processes inspired by human thinking - cool. But LLMs do not engage in "self-reflection, verification, and dynamic strategy adaption." The more we anthropomorphize LLMs, the less we will understand how to use them.

Ugh. There's a big difference between AI and #GenAI. This is almost certainly AI-based. (And Android has had it for over a year...) We need to get better at this difference so we can have productive conversations about whether GenAI is worth the ethical, environmental, & intellectual property costs.

This is a really fascinating article on why LLMs will likely always suffer from hallucinations and how the fixes are unpalatable to average consumers. It suggest general use LLMs will always have hallucinations, whereas more bespoke LLMs could be made more reliable, at significant expense.

Helpful article by @mikecaulfield.bsky.social on how just one extra prompt can lead LLMs to provide better output. I still wonder how much of this behavior is due to LLM designers' decision to make it anthropomorphic, thus requiring human-like cajoling to get it to provide good information.

Flipped K-12 classrooms lead to higher academic performance across cognitive and affective domains, compared to traditional classrooms. I like how this meta-analysis accounted for the nature of the "flipping" also. No diffs across disciplines either, wow! #PsychSciSky #AcademicSky #EduSky

🗣️This is worth a read. GenAI is so, so strange. I've gotten some output that has shocked me (e.g., strikingly good summary of the state-of-the-field in epistemic cognition) and other output that was laughably bad. Jagged frontier, indeed. Regardless, GenAI "intelligence" is a smile on a dog.

Oh dear. Oh no. Regardless of the reasons for the incorrect sources, I feel bad for the authors. The viability gap between "using GenAI to help you do things" and "using GenAI to do things for you" is a chasm. A chasm. (And that all presupposes you should use GenAI at all, which is contentious.)

Agreed. Anthropomorphic AI is dangerous. “Just as we should produce AI that prioritizes engagement with humans and real-world interactions in our physical and human world, we should build AI that only ever presents itself as an AI, that maximizes utility while minimizing markers of consciousness.”
