Today I handed in the full manuscript for The Slime Mold's Guide to World Domination. After two years of incessant deadline pressure, I feel like I can finally breathe again. This morning, after > two years, I finished reading the very last paper for my slime mold book. In case you've ever wondered how much research it takes to write a book, here is a photo of 95% of the papers and all but three of the books I read to write "The Slime Mold's Guide to World Domination".

Yesterday I disqualified a paper from research on my slime mold book for being nearly incoherent, a punishment I dubbed the "Pain Penalty". To back up my sense that this thing was not worth it, I checked the number of citations on Google Scholar: 9.

Rudist bivalves! These were apparently the tribbles of Cretaceous reefs. The vase-shaped mollusks with lids appear only in the late Jurassic, take over reef-building in the Cretaceous, and then utterly disappear when the asteroid hits. 🤯 Amazing!

We used to only know Promachoteuthis sulcus from a single specimen that looked like it had a creepy, tooth smile. (It's actually folded, circular lips) But recently we saw the first Promachoteuthis live in the wild, and its so pretty! I'm sorry we thought you were a creep!
