This is such a loss. I've served on the selection committee for this program for the past three years, because it has funded so many incredible people doing such important research over the years. It should be expanding to meet the new challenges of climate change, but instead is totally defunded.

Another day testing the limits of resilience. The Alexandria NSF building was designed for the NSF merit review process (gold standard), complete with a floor devoted to panels. Now we aren’t allowed to have in person panels. The loss of US science leadership will haunt this country for decades.

We said goodbye to 6 long term, highly valued colleagues at the NOAA Chemical Sciences Lab yesterday. Andy Langford, Jim Roberts, Wayne Angeline, Bob Portman, Cathy Weable, Jeanne Waters. All retired earlier than planned to spare other jobs. It’s just not the same lab today.

This action will have severe consequences: not only does US science impact the economy through new inventions, knowledge, and medical breakthroughs, but these NSF grants are the wages for our talented students and researchers who will otherwise leave STEM - or the country.
