I spoke with a hurricane modeler who was just fired from the branch of NOAA that keeps weather models running. He got a form letter like hundreds of others telling him he was losing his job in an hour. This bodes very poorly for American forecasting. Gift link:

I was in Atlanta last weekend visiting friends who work for the CDC. I also learned the CDC is not participating in a WHO flu strain selection meeting (
