This is an irresponsible take on a v. complex issue. Landmines are responsible for deaths of countless animals, they cause serious land degradation, chem pollution, physical disruption, and impede sustainable development. Keeping people away is not the only thing that matters 4 nature conservation.

Same here. Serving on many proposal review panels for federal funding agencies over many years, it's clear that most people in this process—both the dedicated federal employees stewarding our science and peer reviewers—do their very best to support as many people as possible with limited resources.

This is true across vast areas of STEMM. To say that scientists are freaking out, depressed, upset, and afraid would be an understatement at this point.

Science saves lives in a changing world

Not to mention the knock-on effects to the greater scientific economy, like suppliers and support staff, which will in turn compromise the ability of the few who have funding to do their work.

This represents a systematic dismantling of the US STEM ecosystem that will create lasting negative consequences for innovation and competitiveness.
