July 25, 1944. Operation Spring began at 03:30 with the goal of taking some of the villages southeast of Caen: St. Martin, St. Andre, Tilly-La-Campagne, and Verrieres. It was a disaster.

#OTD in 1944, the murdering of Canadian POWs in Normandy by the 12th SS Panzer Division began. The North Nova Scotia Highlanders and tanks of the 27th Canadian Armoured Regiment (Sherbrooke Fusilier Regiment) were the spear point of the 9th Canadian Infantry Brigade advance to Carpiquet on June 7.

It's 81 years since the Battle of Normandy (tomorrow marks the anniversary of D-Day). For context, 81 years prior to the fight in northern France was the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. The opportunity to connect what happened in the Gathemo in August 1944 to the present was too good to pass up.

“At a time when international relations are tense and some American leaders are questioning alliances in Europe, the gesture is a reminder of how deep the bond runs between the French and their liberators. And the commemoration…began because one man wondered what happened to his great-uncle…”

A visit to the former RAF Down Ampney looking for WW2 concrete. The airfield was pivotal in many British airborne operations and the returning of wounded back from the war in Europe during 1944-45. The airfield has returned to agricultural use once more, and there are little reminders of its past.

A sad day on the battlefields of Arnhem, the memorial plaque at the foot of the John Frost Bridge seems to have been stolen. During our visit today we noticed that there is now an empty hole where the plaque used to be. Very, very sad.
