On the way home from Norfolk I stopped to photograph the Elveden war memorial. Its siting at the meeting point of three parishes was central to its function as a memorial. Though with the widening of the A12 its grandeur in the landscape is now difficult to capture. #ww1 #memorial

One of the things I love most about Arlington is the mists. This morning’s chilly start had the valleys draped in white.

I’ve had an influx of followers over the weekend, so here’s a bit about me. After a decade as a military history illustrator my artwork now consists mainly of pieces relating to architecture and memory. Alongside this, I am writing my first book relating to memorialisation and the Great War.

At a time of year when our thoughts drift to the places of the bible, mine also go to the men who experienced their last Christmas in them. Remembering my Gt Gt Uncle Bertie, killed on this day in 1917 serving with 2/Civil Service Rifles, just to the north of Jerusalem. #ww1

Beautiful, crisp weather for a Boxing Day walk across the estate up to the place I call Sir John’s prospect and then back through the park. A walk filled with views of Arlington not many realise exist, or bother to seek out.

Quite the show this morning over Arlington.

I'm sorry to hear of the death of the sculptor, carver and letterer Richard Kindersley, who followed in his father David's footsteps at his Cambridge workshop. He'll be best known to many people for his beautiful memorial in Dunblane Cathedral to the young victims of the 1996 school shooting.
