John Frost bridge by night! On a cold and wet afternoon we did a three hour Arnhem tour with a small Dutch Army group. We followed the 1st Airborne Division from the dropzone to the bridge, including the Recce ambush and the Utrechtseweg area.

Good morning from New Orleans! Here to visit the National WWII Museum and see the beautiful artwork outside. Like this one, it’s called “The Mission” and depicts a group of Fighter Pilots who are being briefed before a mission. Stunning!

The 1st Airborne memorial in Arnhem-West. Today I participated in a battlefield tour which was focused on the 11th Parachute Battalion. It was all but destroyed in this area and it was a sobering day of losses and bad decisions.

Today’s battlefield tour was all about the bridges! With four Americans on a wonderful day we visited the main sites of Operation Market Garden on a beautiful autumn day. This is the bridge at Nijmegen that was captured in a combined assault by the 82nd Airborne and the Guards Armoured division.

A new 82nd Airborne memorial graces the roundabout outside Grave, at the former “de Elft crossroads”. On Sept 17th a misidentified German tank approached the E/504 and opens fire. Lieutenant Hanford A Files is killed by a sudden burst of machine gunfire that also wounded a number of other men.

Today’s battlefield tour was all about the battles fought around Veghel. This included a visit to Erp where an original C-47 propeller is kept as a memorial to the crew of “Sonya” which crashed on the first day of Operation Market Garden.

The Naval museum in Varna (Bulgaria), a typical old style museum with lots of stuff standing outside slowly rotting away. Still, when in Varna, worth a visit!

The Houffalize Panther tank, restored to perfection and now sheltered from the weather. We visited this and many other locations around Bastogne today in the fourth and last day with a group of three wonderful friend from the States.

A great Easy Company tour today with a bus full of Dutch men and women. We visited the important locations in the Netherlands where the company was active. Including the famous Schoonderlogt Farm where Dick Winters had his picture taken. Thanks to @battlefieldgron for hosting me!

The majestic road bridge across the Waal River in Nijmegen. Captured on September 20th 1944 in a combined assault by the British Grenadier Guards and the American Paratrooper of the 505th PIR. Massively supported by the heroic Waalcrossing which was executed by the 504th PIR.

The easy company memorial in Nuenen, it lists all (former) members of the company that were killed during Operation Market Garden and on the Island. We visited this location today on a battlefield tour with a lovely couple from Canada.

The last stop on the last England to the Eagle’s Nest tour of the season was to Hitlers least favourite tea house on the mountain overlooking Berchtesgaden. There are just 14 recorded visits that he went up there. A pleasure to guide for @wwiimuseum.bsky.social and @battlefielddisc.bsky.social

This morning during our visit to the Luxembourg American Cemetery we placed flowers on the grave of John Julian. He was killed while on patrol near Bastogne as depicted in the HBO miniseries. With @wwiimuseum.bsky.social and @battlefielddisc.bsky.social

The memorial to Robert Cole, commander of 3rd Battalion 502 Parachute Infantry. Killed on the 18th of September near Best after surviving all of Normandy, including the bayonet charge at Carentan. For that action he was awarded the Medal of Honor but he never knew that.

In the footsteps of Easy Company today which included a walking tour of Eindhoven. At the Church we took this then and now of HQ company 506th PIR who were enjoying a moment of rest on September 18th, 1944. A great day with a lovely couple from the USA.

The commemoration of the 81st anniversary of Operation Market Garden at the Kangaroo Memorial in Veghel. The 101st Airborne Division is represented and the children from a local elementary school are participating in the ceremony.

Did you know that only two Screaming Eagles were awarded the Medal of Honor during WWII? One of them was Robert Cole for his heroic actions near Carentan in Normandy. He was sadly killed on Sept 18 during Market Garden before the medal recommendation was approved.

General George S Patton Jr grave at Luxembourg American Cemetery. We visited it this morning and paid our respects at the grave of Patrick Neill and then the General. Now we are on our way to Haguenau on the England to the Eagles nest with the @WWIImuseum and @BattlefieldDisc

Bastogne today! We began this morning with a visit to the graves of the two civilian nurses who helped the Americans during the siege. Renée Lemaire and Augusta Chiwy, we paid our respects before moving on into town for the rest of today’s itinerary. @WWIImuseum @BattlefieldDisc

This morning we visited the memorials for Joe Mann and Robert Cole, the only two men in the 101st Airborne to be awarded the Medal of Honor during WWII. They died within 24 hours of each other and less than a mile apart. Both didn’t know they would be awarded the medal. @wwiimuseum.bsky.social

The first Saturday of September is always reserved for the annual Airborne march. This commemorative event takes you through the battlefields around Oosterbeek and every year over 30.000 people participate. It was my 32nd time and the kids are racking up the numbers too.

The other Joe Mann memorial, located at the pavilion about a mile away from where he was killed. Joe threw himself on a grenade to save his friends. For this he was awarded the Medal of Honor. The only one for the 101st Airborne during Operation Market Garden

This 25-Pounder gun was a gift from the veterans of the 3rd Battalion, 1st Airborne Division. It commemorates the men who never made it home and is dedicated to the people of Arnhem for their support and courage during the battle. It stands guard over the Arnhem bridge.

The Majestic Nijmegen bridge, captured intact by the allies on 20 September 1944 during Operation Market Garden. Arnhem was then only 10 miles away but they would not reach it in time. Notice the German PAK 38 gun on the lower right corner in the vegetation.

This medieval castle at Heeswijk played a small part during Operation Market Garden. The 1st Bn, 501st PIR landed here by mistake. The pathfinder plane was shot down with very few survivors leaving the dropzone unmarked. After a brief battle the jump casualties that stayed behind were taken prisoner

A Dutch Cougar helicopter of the Air Assault brigade throws up a dust cloud at the Ginkel Heath. In 1944 this heath was the dropzone of the 4th Parachute brigade during Operation Market Garden.

Bullet holes on a farm building in Foy near Bastogne. The sniper that Shifty Powers shot from further up the road was located at the top window. We visited this and another locations today on our Bastogne Tour. Our second and last day with two wonderful couples from America.

The Day Turner memorial in Dahl and his grave at the nearby Luxembourg American Cemetery. SSGT Turner was the only American to be awarded the Medal of Honor in Luxembourg. His incredible action took place on January 8th, 1945 during a German counterattack.

On my way to my overnight in the Ardennes for a two day battle of the Bulge tour I stopped at the Achilles Tank Destroyer Mk 10 in La Roche-en-Ardenne. It commemorates the British involvement of the 52nd Highland division during the Bulge.

The modern day Son Bridge, which we visited today on a tour with a group from the US Army. We began the day at Joe’s Bridge and continued up Hells Highway to Veghel. A interesting day with a very attentive audience! Tomorrow we will visit Nijmegen and Arnhem and have a debrief.

A wonderful battlefield tour in the footsteps of Easy Company in the Netherlands today. With a lovely family from the USA, including three young kids, we had an amazing day today. One of the stops was Schoonderlogt Farm where Dick Winters had his picture taken under the arch.

This Bible has a bullet hole in it from the Arnhem Battle. Located in the old church in Oosterbeek it was hit in September 1944 when the men of the 1st Airborne division were pressed into a small perimeter and awaiting rescue by 30th Corps that never came.

Today’s battlefield tour was focused on the 82nd Airborne around Nijmegen. From the bridge at Grave to the Groesbeek heights we ended in Nijmegen at the bridge and the Waal Crossing (pictured). A very hot day but we managed to, Arnhem awaits tomorrow on our third day with a lovely group of 6.

Today’s tour was all about Hell’s Highway. With a group of six from England we explored the battlefields of the 101st Airborne between Son and Veghel, including a visit to the Windmill at Eerde. Day one of three, tomorrow we’ll explore Nijmegen!

Just finished reading this amazing book. If you want to know all there is to know about the German side of the battle at Arnhem then this is the book you want. Tons of maps and pictures are provided to fully understand the different battles. Highly recommended it!

A visit to the Overloon War Museum never disappoints, especially not when they have a Tiger tank on loan for the summer. What an absolute beast and amazing to see up close.

Did you know that the Germans never planned to destroy the main span of the Nijmegen bridge? They intended to destroy the smaller span on the left, this would have achieved the same result without the need to rebuild the entire bridge. Why the explosives failed is anyone’s guess…

The temporary John Frost Memorial at the foot of the bridge that bears his name. The Frost picture is created out of small pictures of the men who fought at the bridge. It’s absolutely stunning but it’s only here because the original bronze plaque was stolen earlier this year.

On the battlefields today with my Dodge WC 51 and a number of Jeep. We will be driving around the 82nd Airborne area, we are now at DZ-N where the 505th landed and a host of gliders.

Did you know that German Field Marshal Model was located in this hotel at the start of Operation Market Garden? Fate or bad luck caused Model to be in Oosterbeek, within 3 miles of the drop zones of the 1st Airborne division.
