The most photographed house on the Easy Company tour in Nuenen is one Easy Co never fought at. Band of Brothers fans know the red brick building from "Replacements," where a German MG pins the company down from its roof. HBO filmed it all in the UK on a set copy. Easy Co fought elsewhere in Nuenen.

Grave bridge, 17 Sep 1944. 600m across the Maas, the longest bridge captured during Market Garden. E Co, 504th PIR was the only 82nd AB element to drop on the far bank. Lt Thompson's stick took the south end and two bunkers. Fell intact in under 2 hours. We visit on most MG tours.

The tree marks where Lance Sergeant John Baskeyfield, 2nd South Staffords, fought his last action. 20 September 1944, Oosterbeek perimeter. His 6-pounder destroyed two German SPGs. Wounded, crew dead, he crawled to a second gun, fired one round, and was killed. He was 21.

Doris Newman's last word before she died was "Thomas." Her husband, Sgt Thomas Newman, was 34 when his Sherman was knocked out near Koevering on 25 Sept 1944, supporting Easy Company of the 506th PIR. El Alamein veteran, 44th RTR. Doris never remarried, her ashes were placed in his grave at Uden.

Easy Company's last major combat engagement of the Bastogne campaign ended here, in Rachamps. The 506th cleared this Belgian village on 16 January 1945, advancing downhill through snow toward German positions in the valley. Resistance was light.

The bridge across the Rhine, one of the stops on my Arnhem highlights tour. Frost's 2nd Battalion held this span for nearly four days. By 21 September, the ammunition was gone. Frost was carried into captivity.

Overgrown steps and a retaining wall. This is what remains of the Berghof, Hitler’s residence on the Obersalzberg from 1936 until the end of the war. RAF Lancasters bombed it on 25 April 1945. The SS burned the ruins. Bavaria demolished the shell in 1952. The forest has taken the rest.

At 0700 on 30 November 1944, the 46th Armored Infantry Battalion crossed 2,000 yards of open ground to take Kleinhau and Hill 401.3. Casualties were heavy. Visited the memorial today with a guest who just learned her father fought here.

Joe Mann was awarded the Medal of Honor for throwing himself backwards onto a German hand grenade. He couldn't pick it up. Both arms were bandaged to his chest, immobilised by four separate wounds taken the day before.

Today's tour: the son and two grandsons of a glider pilot who landed near Nijmegen on 18 September 1944, his Waco carrying a jeep of the 320th GFAB. We followed his route from the landing zone south to the fields below Veghel, where he was caught up in the German counter-attack at the Koevering.

Over 54,000 names on its walls, and it still wasn't enough. The Menin Gate in Ypres was built to record every Commonwealth soldier killed in the Salient with no known grave. When they finished it in 1927, they realised it couldn't hold them all.

Still on the wall. The swastika was scrambled. Everything else stayed. Berchtesgaden station, on my battlefield tours.

The bridge behind this monument carries 48 pairs of street lights, one for each American paratrooper killed crossing the Waal here on 20 September 1944. Every evening at sunset they are lit one by one at marching pace. A veteran walks with them. Every single night since 2014.

Three guardhouses once controlled the road from Berchtesgaden to the Obersalzberg. Only one survives. Built in 1937, it sits by the river near the train station, right where the road begins its climb.

A few stone foundations in the forest on the Obersalzberg. Easy to walk past. This was the Kampfhäusl, a small log cabin where the second volume of Mein Kampf was dictated after its author's release from Landsberg prison in 1924.

On 30 September 1938, this was the Führerbau, where four leaders signed the Munich Agreement at 1:30 in the morning. Czechoslovakia's delegates were not inside. They waited in a nearby hotel, under Gestapo watch, and were handed the result the next morning. Their approval was not expected.

The room is smaller than you’d expect. Courtroom 600, Nuremberg. Where the International Military Tribunal changed international law forever.

Bullet holes from 1944 in a wall built in 1155. The Barbarossa ruin in Nijmegen's Valkhof Park stands overlooking the Waal road bridge, right where the 82nd Airborne and British armour fought to clear German positions during Market Garden. Today's highlights tour with an American guest.

This parking lot hides the most deliberately forgotten structure in Berlin. Beneath the gravel lie the remains of the Führerbunker, walls up to four metres thick, that the Red Army tried three times to demolish and failed. So the East Germans buried it and paved over the top.

Paratroopers of the 101st Airborne at the bridge over the Dommel on the Kanaalstraat in Eindhoven, 18 September 1944. The Screaming Eagles lost hours they could not spare before they ever reached Eindhoven.

The Colonel Sink Memorial Trail winds up Mount Currahee near Toccoa, Georgia. It does not look like much until you start climbing. Colonel Robert Sink had the men of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment run this trail repeatedly during 1942 and 1943.

Near Wiltz, Luxembourg, a PaK 43/88mm stands as part of the Bazooka Boogie Memorial. The memorial takes its name from the 28th Infantry Division Band.

The 7th King’s Own Scottish Borderers landed 750 strong on Landing Zone ‘S’ near Wolfheze on 17th September 1944. By the evening of the 19th, after Ginkel Heath and the Johannahoeve, around 250 remained.

On 17 September 1944, Generalfeldmarschall Walter Model was having lunch at his Heeresgruppe B headquarters in the Hotel Tafelberg, Pietersbergseweg, Oosterbeek, when airborne troops landed at Wolfheze. His initial reaction was that the Allies were coming for him. They were not.

Napoleon's tomb sits 12 metres below the dome of Les Invalides in Paris, visible from the gallery above but unreachable without descending. Visitors must look down at the sarcophagus, then read the inscription, then look up at the dome. Architect Louis Visconti designed that sequence deliberately

Visit the Rhine at Oosterbeek today and you'll wonder what the fuss was about. Two modest river arms where a single wide channel used to be. This 1944 aerial overlaid on Google Maps corrects that impression.

At the Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek today with Viking, and this display on the Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade is one of the highlights. These men jumped into an almost impossible situation south of the river on 21 Sept 1944, and their story deserves to be told. The museum does it well.

Yes, this is a piloted V1 Flying Bomb! During WWII, Germany officially considered suicide attacks incompatible with its military tradition. That did not stop the Luftwaffe from recruiting over 70 volunteers for the Fi 103R Reichenberg programme in 1944.

Today's tour followed Easy Company from the drop zone to the Island, ending here at the Crossroads memorial near Randwijk. From this spot you see exactly what Winters saw at first light on 5 October 1944: flat, open polder, a raised dike road ahead, and no safe way to withdraw.

The Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek, former Hotel Hartenstein. A then-and-now display shows a British airborne soldier inside this building, holding an M1 Carbine. American-made, not standard British issue. But 1st Airborne Division troops used whatever worked during the September 1944 battle.

A 17-pounder anti-tank gun on display outside the Airborne Museum, still showing battle damage from September 1944. It is easy to walk past it on the way to the entrance. Worth stopping.

A solitary bronze paratrooper watches over the fields between Eerde and Veghel, where the 501st PIR dropped on 17 September 1944. The regimental objective was the road and rail bridges at Veghel, a critical link in the corridor XXX Corps needed to reach Arnhem.

This is one of two raised platforms on Munich's Königsplatz, they are overgrown and easy to miss. They are the foundations of the Ehrentempel, Nazi temples built in 1935 to hold the sarcophagi of sixteen men killed in the failed Beer Hall Putsch.

The Kall Trail drops nearly 500 feet into a river gorge and served, improbably, as the 28th Infantry Division's main axis of advance toward Schmidt in November 1944. The attack failed within days.

From up here, the beach at Dieppe looks exactly like what it was: a kill zone. The 1942 raid was planned with no naval bombardment and minimal air support, sending infantry across open shingle against fortified positions in the cliffs and seafront buildings.

The Arnhem bridge sits in the background, probably the most recognised bridge of the Second World War. In the foreground, a 25-pounder field gun. Explaining to my Arnhem Battlefield Tour group today why this gun has no connection to what happened here.

A Celtic cross in French limestone stands at the entrance to the Sunken Lane at Beaumont-Hamel, lit against a heavy sky. However, this is not a 1 July 1916 Battle of the Somme memorial.

One arch. That is what remains of the Anhalter Bahnhof in Berlin, once the largest station in continental Europe. It handled 44,000 passengers a day, with direct connections to Rome, Vienna, and Athens.

The grave of Captain Lionel Queripel, 10th Parachute Battalion. One of five Victoria Crosses awarded at Arnhem, September 1944. Wounded in the face on 19 September, he carried a sergeant to the aid post under fire, then led the assault that cleared the strongpoint holding up his company.

Today’s Battlefield Tour took us to the Arnhem area, focusing on 1st Airborne’s battle in some challenging weather. Fitting, really. One of the stops was the six pounder anti-tank gun memorial in Heelsum, one of the very first memorials placed in the area after the war.

Paratroopers hooked up inside a C-47, frozen in bronze on the National WWII Memorial in Washington DC. As a battlefield guide, I spend most of my time at actual drop zones and landing sites in Europe. Panels like this one compress the chaos of an airborne operation into a clean, composed image.

The fragment of the original abbey of Monte Cassino stonework below the steps is easy to miss. The hills beyond it are not. From this height, the entire Liri Valley is visible, including every route the Allies needed to advance toward Rome.

This memorial in Normandy marks where Easy Company, 506th PIR, lost its commanding officer before a single man could jump. A couple of fields away, C-47 chalk 66, carrying Lieutenant Thomas Meehan III and his entire headquarters section, was hit by flak and clipped a hedgerow at 01:12 on 6 June 1944

A residential garden fence in Oosterbeek, peppered with bullet and shrapnel damage from September 1944. The 1st Airborne Division's shrinking perimeter ran through these streets during the last days of Market Garden.

The Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen. Only the towers remain. On 7 March 1945, troops from the 9th Armored Division reached the Rhine here and found it still standing. Every other bridge had been destroyed.

The memorial on top of the Seelow Heights on the approaches to Berlin was built by the victors, which means it tells one version of what happened here in April 1945.

A battered Achilles tank destroyer stands in La Roche-en-Ardenne, marking the 51st Highland Division's involvement in the Bulge counteroffensive. The Division had been fighting in the Netherlands when it was redirected south in late December 1944 to contain the German salient's western edge.

The Robert Cole monument near Best, visited today leading a battlefield tour along Hell's Highway section of Operation Market Garden. Cole was one of the 101st Airborne's most distinguished officers, having earned the Medal of Honor at Carentan for leading a bayonet charge across an exposed causeway

A German 88mm Pak 43 on a roadside near Clervaux, Luxembourg. Not captured in battle, just abandoned. In early 1945, as the Wehrmacht withdrew through the Ardennes, weapons like this were left behind by the dozen.
