THE KRAKEN is a baroque gathering of international gamers and game creators to play, develop and test fine quality games. Weirdly successful at being a once in a life time event every time.

It is a colossal quest to attend though. Many, many, many people already fail at the first test. First: Get the newsletter. Second: Write an Email that you want to attend.

The mean thing is that each KRAKEN is kind of a once in a lifetime experience. But we want people who want to come back.

You see … if you are nice (and even funny) we might even adopt you! Just ask @niamhcassandra.bsky.social how that went recently. :)

I am sure there is a reason you have not made it yet. I assume it is something that just can't be helped. Check if it is not one of the others. That would be sad.

We run 3 KRAKEN each year at a fantastic location, with great people (a super nice community), amazing guests, great games, incredible food (and CAKE!) an open bar and even offer a way to support people with tight budgets (The Lunar Caravan Society). What is keeping you?

Here's a review of Fighter Wizard Elf that really gets what I'm doing with that game. "Absolutely fascinating". The FWE segment is about halfway through. FTR, the geometric power curve he talks about is the same one that's in 13th Age. FWE is a fundraiser for @the-kraken.bsky.social. #ttrpg

How do you determine the modifiers? I could see rolling 3–18 to see what your modifiers are & then writing only your modifiers on the character sheet. That's probably what Fighter Wizard Elf should have done. At @the-kraken.bsky.social, some players were confused by ability scores vs ability mods.

This is the way. Ars Magica (1987) lets you use whatever ability is appropriate for the skill check (eg, Perception + Sword skill to assess someone else's sword skills). 13th Age (2013) does the same. It's one big way that I didn't follow the example laid down by RuneQuest.

I've been putting together a list of major Call of Cthulhu translations in other languages. I'm currently purposefully omitting minor revisions (e.g., 5.1, 5.11, 5.6) and limited editions. Anyone know of anything I've missed?

During the campaign, the swords would find better and better grips, the way a D&D character finds better & better magic items. Could be other mighty items besides swords. Inspired by Croc's Bloodlust. 2/2

Indeed. I must have been tired when I wrote that. Decades ago I wanted to do a D&D setting about heroes who wield mighty magic swords that are the actual characters. The disposable wielders were to be called "grips", and I got to use that term with you, so thanks. 1/2

Thanks to my trip to Germany, I have a new way to be annoyingly pretentious. I can put the accent on the first syllable in "Berlin". It's like after I was a guest at Ropecon in Finland in 2003, and I learned that the accent is on the first syllable in "Helsinki" (as it is with all Finnish words).

The beer bottles have rings of wear around them. They don't just recycle the glass; they reuse the bottles. No beer bottles in the recycling bin (I learned)!

This one-hour session is a great way to get a look at the world of Glorantha and the 13th Age system, including how to do a travel montage. I had a ton of fun playing a duck-man warrior-sage with a baboon sidekick. Also, what it's like to game in a Prussian Schloss (manor house). #ttrpg

"Herren" is German for "lords", and it has finally sunk in that "ladies & gentlemen" means "women & men of superior birth".

Been waiting for this one for about 45 years now

Thirty-five years ago, A German taught me how to open a beer bottle with just a key, a spoon, or some other piece of metal to use as a lever. A couple weeks ago at @the-kraken.bsky.social, a German taught me how to open a beer bottle with just a piece of paper. Those clever Germans!

And this is why I was willing to devote my career to tabletop roleplaying games: they make creators of us all. TTRPGs are DIY in a world otherwise owned by Disney, et al. Like Tolkien, I think that creating emulates & honors our creator*. *whether natural selection or God

In retrospect, I think that the montage in this adventure worked particularly well because it took place along a magical pathway. We were free to invent challenges and solutions that were dreamlike, and we knew in advance that they had no bearing on the everyday world to which we then returned.
