I haven’t really posted about this event because I had kind of a bad experience (nothing to do with the cast or the show itself, and it worked itself out, but I’ll just say I came away from it severely bummed), so I’m very much looking forward to a do-over.

In total dad mode on my day off. Slow cooking a pork shoulder all day and #NowWatching (rewatching) True Grit (2010). Jeff Bridges truly is phenomenal in the film, but this and Crazy Heart really just took over his career. He’s basically been Rooster Cogburn for the past 15 years now. #Filmsky

Still thinking about a conversation w/ a mutual where I discovered the latest Hell House LLC is meant to be the finale, and what I took to be a cliffhanger tease was in fact a poorly explained flashback. I originally gave it 2 stars but now I’m pretty sure it’s the worst movie I’ve seen this year.

Zerograd (1988) is my movie to beat for ‘discovery of the year.’ A nightmarish comedy about the fall of the Soviet Union. Surreal, funny, sad, at times beautiful. I’m sure a lot of the cultural references went over my head but what an experience!

This morning I slept in, but that means I was still up by 6am. Watched Night of the Creeps before taking the youngest to Legoland for their last Brick or Treat of the season. She won ‘best homemade’ costume, and we saved a praying mantis friend from a busy walkway. Not a bad October 32nd.

I had a real hard time getting into the Halloween spirit this year. Too busy, too tired, too overwhelmed by… the world. Nothing felt much like Halloween to me. I’m gonna be home a bit more this month so I’m officially declaring November to be October Part II.

A kid at my daughter’s elementary school was moonwalking, which has led to her watching some Michael Jackson performances on YouTube. It’s… strange… hearing her talk about how cool he was, & how much she likes his voice. Bluesky… when is the right time to talk to your kids about Michael Jackson?

Having not seen the post this is referring to, I’ll still agree with the sentiment. ‘Lynchian’ is the most overused, and misused, ways of describing art. Lynch had too specific a vision to just boil his name down to a synonym for ‘weird.’

Had to bail on a friend’s event tonight and feel real shitty about it. I want to support my friend, and I know how hard it is to get people out in LA. I was really excited to go, but my latest job requires me to be out the door at 3:30am so there’s just no way I can be social on a weeknight.

I missed the first couple minutes of this one during the 24 hour horror marathon, but this is definitely my favorite horror discovery of this Halloween season. Now available for all to see!

Sundays are perfect for classic horror! #NowWatching Tarantula (1955) with the youngest, who wants a tarantula SO BAD. This movie, directed by Jack Arnold, is so much fun, and the composite effects for the giant tarantula menacing the countryside are absolutely top notch. #Horrorsky #Filmsky

Completely by accident and surprise, I ended up at the Anaheim Fall Festival for a little while today. While wandering with my youngest, we ran across the @thefridacinema.org booth, where I picked up some stickers and won a free ticket. Plenty of stuff on the calendar I want to use it on.

Best part is James Karen & Thom Mathews as two new characters after they suffered the worst fate imaginable in part one. In the midst of their slow zombification, they share the feeling that this has happened to them before. That filled me with such a deep, cosmic dread as a kid.

Got the day off, doing some housework, watching some movies. #NowWatching Return of the Living Dead Part II Not a film I particularly like. Inferior in every way to part 1, but it has some moments. And I want something I can kinda half pay attention to while I do dishes. #Horrorsky #Filmsky

Finished Black Flame by @scumbelievable.bsky.social while on my work lunch. I’ve loved all of her books but she just keeps getting better and better. I thought Cuckoo was right in my sweet spot, but man, Black Flame hit me like a truck. What an ending!

I really enjoy @getplayedpod.bsky.social podcast, but I get a special joy out of @heathercampbell.bsky.social’s increasingly insane ad reads for online gambling, transitioning into the most sober, measured description of what to do if you have a gambling addiction problem. The only ad I never skip.

Breaking in to the new Blu-ray’s I got today. The youngest wanted to watch a Godzilla and we eventually landed on Godzilla and Mothra! Good choice. Oh man, I need to update my letterboxd ‘to watch’ list. #Filmsky

Stopped by a yard sale down the street. I normally pass them by because yard sales here are mostly boring home goods bought in bulk. But this guy had TUBS full of Blu-ray’s and DVDs and books and CDs. He said ‘fill up a box, $5.’ Look at this haul, for only $10!!!

Back home from our night in Napa. Made sure we passed through San Jose to stop at the incredible Recycle Bookstore. Then stopped at a roadside stand in Gilroy (the garlic capital of the world) for some garlic ice cream. An odd experience at first but surprisingly delicious.

I suspect the MAGA government decided to launch all these Bluesky accounts tonight to try to bait people in advance of No Kings. These people have incurable 4chan brain and this is how they operate. Block them. Do not engage. Do not give them what they want.

A few shots from Shonen Knife’s show tonight at the Roxy. If not my favorite concert of the year, it was definitely the most fun. Just pure joy from start to finish. Another one I can’t believe I got to see live.

Phantasm Oblivion. It’s kind of half a film, more build up to part 5 than a story on its own. But I do really love it. It brings the dreamlike tone to the fore, using deleted scenes from 20 years earlier to emphasize the toll this has taken on our heroes, resulting in a pretty elegiac tone.

Caught another SOV found footage horror tonight; Bum (2025). Saw people saying this is the best VHS segment not in a VHS movie, and that’s accurate. Maybe would have been better in that format. As it is, the film’s tone is so dialed up that I started to get tired by the half hour mark.

I started this one a bit late, and I almost turned it off for that reason. But something about the SOV look, the haunted tone, the grimy gore, instantly grabbed me. Glad I stuck with it. Still a work in progress, the completed film should be available later this month. Worth hunting down!
