Got to Ladykillers in my Coen’s rewatch. I was anxious for this one because I liked it fine when it came out but it’s consistently cited as their worst film. But you know what? It’s good! I maybe liked it more this time. Some good but maybe mediocre stuff in the first half…

This was one cozy ass movie. I don’t know how else to explain it. Every shot of an empty lot, every burned out husk of a building, every rusted fire escape and street dotted with skeletal trees. There was something in this I just wanted to luxuriate in. Yes, even the cheesy solarization effects.

Backed this awhile ago on Zoop. Excited to finally have it in my hands. Who Killed Nessie? By @paulcornell.bsky.social and @rachaelsmith.bsky.social . My daughter is quite intrigued. She’s deep into her cryptid phase, which is delightful.

Forgot to circle back to this. The directors cut is a clear improvement over the theatrical. Removes the clunky wraparound bits and allows the plot and spookiness a chance to breathe. The film might not really ‘work’ in any form, but I liked the theatrical, and I think I loved the directors cut.

Started my day with two horror films: Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972) and Friendship (2024). Guess which I found more unsettling?

A few hours ago I got back from seeing Eraserhead at the Greystone Mansion. It was filmed mostly in the stables back when the AFI was there. These outdoor locations should be familiar to anyone who has seen any Lynch doc where they discuss Eraserhead. Super fun night. #Filmsky

Whoah! This was terrific! Parts of it were delightfully bizarre, parts of it really raised my stress levels, and parts of it were stunningly melancholic. Definitely glad I stumbled across it. As an added bonus; this has opened up my Tubi algorithm to a bunch of Soviet & eastern bloc films!

Everyone remembers the Zuni Fetish Doll, but the other segments are pretty solid as well. Not nearly as flashy, and both are pretty slowly paced, but I particularly enjoyed the first story. I wonder if David Bruckner had it in mind when he made is V/H/S segment.

Maybe more generic than The Imvisible Ray, but I enjoyed this a little more. Despite the fact that this is pretty much Stanley Ridges’ film. Karloff and Lugosi are great, of course, but they’re pretty much sidelined for most of the movie and, I believe, never share the screen.

Today’s spooky short story, which I read while waiting for Oasis, was Heart-Shaped Clock, by Kelli Jo Ford. Collected in Never Whistle At Night, an anthology of horror stories from indigenous authors. The story isn’t horror, really, but it’s one of the best in the book so far. #Booksky #Horrorsky
